After a six month hiatus, Macie’s V is back in action.

I scrambled to disconnect my phone from the Bluetooth when one more came through.

Picture me saying that in a sports commentator's voice.

I groaned. Dom laughed.

I responded:

I hate you.

Not on a date. I went skiing with Dom.

Bummer. I was hoping you were getting laid.

Thankfully, I’d gotten my phone disconnected so the remainder of our conversation wouldn’t be seen by the man sitting next to me. It wasn’t lost on me that she immediately assumed my being with Dom meant that I certainly was not getting laid tonight. I let out a frustrated sigh.

Carter said to tell you that if it makes you feel better, he’s not getting laid either. Walls too thin here.

That doesn’t make me feel better.

It reminds me of all the making up I’m sure the two of you will be doing once you get home.

I locked my phone screen and shoved it in my pocket before she could shoot back a snarky response.

“Has it really been six months?” Dom asked, eyeing me curiously from his seat.

Fucking Penelope.

I rolled my eyes.

It had been longer than six months, actually. I went on a few dates with a man named Lucas after moving to Los Angeles. I let Penny believe we hooked up because I felt weird telling her that I chickened out on sex with him. In reality, I haven’t had sex since Jeremy, and within the last year of my relationship with him, sex was as rare as unicorns.

I had no issues with one-night-stands in college, but something had clearly changed for me. During my second date with Lucas I tried talking myself into sex with him. He was kind, funny, and good looking. But the moment his hand slipped through the waistband of the jeans I was wearing that night, my entire body froze. I just couldn’t connect with him.

Pulling my thoughts from the memory, I huffed. “I am not answering that.”

Chapter 15

Whenwepulledupto my apartment building, I was surprised to see him park the car in the alley behind it. As he turned off the engine and unbuckled himself, I glanced at him with a question on my face.

“What?” he asked.

“Inviting yourself up?”

He chuckled, “It’s late, Mace. I was just going to walk you upstairs and make sure you get inside all right.” He threw open the car door. “Now that Penelope knows you’re with me, I can’t risk having you go missing or wind up dead.”

I let him follow me inside the building and up the stairs until we reached my apartment door. Before I could give myself the option to overthink things, or even worse, invite him inside, I unlocked the door and grasped the handle. “Thank you for dinner.” He inched into me, and I could feel his mouth hovering just above my head. “And for today. I had fun.”

I pressed on the door to open it, when his hand grabbed the handle over mine. “Macie,” he rasped. That arm was draped across my body, and his other fell against the wall beside the door as he leaned into me. His head dipped so that his breath would brush against my neck. “Are you going to tell me what you meant earlier? About your needs?”

The tone in his voice was a soft caress against my skin. Every inch of me came to life at the sensation of his fingers overtop mine.

“No,” I whispered.

He leaned closer, so close that his body was almost pressed against mine, but far enough away that the space between us was palpable. He was teasing me with his presence– with his voice and breath and touch. Teasing me until I gave in. Until I gave him the information he so desperately wanted to know.

“I thought we agreed to honesty.” His voice was rough, almost desperate.
