“Time to go home!” Sandra claps me off my chair, and I stand in a jolt.

“You’re staying with Lily, for safety,” Brody informs Sandra, grabs her by the shoulders and guides her out of the room. He waits by the door.

I strap my guitar to my back, take my purse off the dresser, carefully place the flowers inside it, then take my phone, flashlight mode still turned on.

“Stash your phone, princess.” Brody says, pulling a small flashlight off his belt. “I’ll light your way.”

With a smile, I walk forward, knowing that my knight in a black suit is coming after me to protect me.

Chapter Four

BRODY

We’rejustoutsidetheclub and there’s a lot of people in the street, all confused as to where to go in the pitch black.

“These people should have stayed inside!” Sandra cries out, nearing panic. “Let’s get out of here!”

I hear glass breaking and a car alarm goes off, startling the women. Lily, walking in front of me under my watchful eye, flinches and clings closer to me for a moment.

“Where’s the car?” She looks up at me, shaken.

In this mess, I’m not even sure of where the car is myself, so I fumble for the keys in my pocket and click to hear the beep.

“Straight ahead,” I reassure her with a squeeze on her arm and feel her trembling under my hand.

I’m paying attention to Sandra and Lily and their direct surroundings, but I miss a beat and hear princess scream, “My purse!” much to my chagrin.

I turn around immediately and run a few steps but realize soon that I’ll be leaving the ladies alone in the dark, and that’s the last thing I want.

“It’s gone,” I lament, long having lost track of the perp. “Let’s call the police and let them take care of this creep.”

“No phone signal…” Sandra says, holding her phone.

“Stash that! Wanna be robbed too?” I say, harsher than I should, but knowing I’m right, she puts her phone away and enters the car.

Lily follows suit, pouty because of the purse, and I’m angry with myself because of the unfortunate mishap.

I go in last, taking the wheel with a white knuckled grip, and press on the ignition, bringing the car’s engine to life.

“Where to, ma’ams?” Sandra shakes her head and cringes, but Lily gives a slight smile, which I’m happy to see.

Lily leans forward. “Three blocks up and one to the left.”

I nod and pull the car away from the curb.

“Wait…” I turn to Lily. “Do you have your keys?”

“U-hum!” She meets my eyes. “I’ve got one under the front mat.”

I feel the need to facepalm and groan. I can’t fathom her naivety in doing something that foolish.

“That’s a bad idea, Lily…” My voice is sullen.

“Told you,” Sandra adds to Lily’s shame, and I feel bad for the girl. Barely a year out of college, she can’t be more than twenty-three. Now a singer gaining popularity in New York of all places, I wonder if she’s from a small town.

“The red brick and mortar to the left, Brody,” she mutters softly as she points.

“This one?” I slow down the car in front of a quaint little building as directed.
