“And will you be with me if I’m not pregnant?” I’m pretty sure I asked that before, but I want to hear it again.

“Yes,” he kisses my temple.

“And what are we now?” I ask again the question he’s been refusing to answer this whole time.

I feel his chest press against mine, him taking a deep breath, mustering the words he has to say.

“Is boyfriend and girlfriend enough for you?”

I turn around to face him that same instant, grinning from ear to ear and not even worried of what he will think of me.

And I kiss him. At first, it is with the chaste purity of a sublime happiness that overtakes me, but soon a burning desire follows.

I suddenly catch myself wishing I was alone with him, and am happy that the night is still young.

Chapter Sixteen

BRODY

Ihatepolicestations. The noise, the crowds, and the high tension makes them a gunpowder keg ready to blow.

I’m here with Lily to sign the restraining order against Ben. It all needs to be quick, because we’re travelling to DC today for the beginning of the tour and based on how long the police officers are taking, we’re not moving from the chairs we’re sitting in any time soon.

“How long…?” Lily groans, looking distressed.

I stand to look for the detective who led us here. Her desk is cluttered, with a corner reserved for pictures of her husband and kids.

Soon I see her coming with papers in hand. Detective Atkinson is a woman in her late thirties, short brown hair with bangs and a few pounds over her ideal weight. She sits back behind her desk with an apologetic look on her face and lays the papers in front of us with pride.

“Here you go! Sorry it took so long,” Atkinson says, handing Lily her personal pen.

“And with this he’s not allowed to come close to me?” Lily asks while signing.

Atkinson sighs. “Like we always say, a restraining order is not a magic wand. But the moment he threatens you or approaches you, call us, okay?”

Lily nods and returns the papers to the detective, and I nod my head in comprehension to what she says. “Where is he now?” I ask.

“Still in custody while we search his apartment,” Atkinson revises the papers and gives Lily her copy.

“Can I see him?” Lily asks, holding the papers close to her heart.

The detective looks at both of us in confusion, and I look at Lily while twisting my nose. “I don’t think that’s a good idea,” I say.

But Lily just shakes her head and reaches for my hand, “I need to know why he did it.”

Atkinson stands, inviting us to join her with a signal of her hand. “If you insist, then I’ll take you there. He’s in one of our containment cells.”

We follow her into the depths of the police station, getting to a locked gate in a lower level where an officer stands guard. He lets us in at Atkinson’s request, and we’re soon in front of Ben’s prison cell.

“Here he is,” Atkinson says.

Ben jumps at the bars when he sees Lily, his breathing suffered and trembly, just like the first time we met.

“Lily!” he pleads, “Please tell them that I did nothing of what they say!”

Lily holds one of her arms and looks straight at him, a tearful expression in her eyes. “Stop lying, Ben. We know it was you,” she says.

Ben shakes his head with violence, denying her words with vigor. “It wasn’t me! It wasn’t me! It was—”
