His head lowers, our lips inches apart.

I grip his shirt. Firm hands caress my torso.

My breath hitches, and I run my tongue over my bottom lip. If he were to kiss me right now, I’d let him. I’d hate myself in the morning, but in this very moment, I’d shed my clothes in a courtyard and give myself to him.

And then he vibrates.

Literally,Will is vibrating.

I look down at where the vibration is coming from. It’s his crotch. Well, of all the magical things, now, I know he has a vibrating crotch.

He steps back from me and takes out his phone. Kent’s name is across the screen. He hits Ignore, but with his phone in his hand, he looks at the screen with more interest and starts swiping.

“I have a bunch of text messages,” he says, sweeping over one in particular. “Tara’s looking for you. Where’s your phone?”

I swallow, confused. “It’s in my bag. You brought it to the truck.”

“We have to go.”

“Tara’s knows I’m at a wedding. What does she want?”

He puts his phone to his ear and takes my hand, pulling me rather forcefully around the building, past the service entrance and to the staff parking lot.

“Where are we going?” I ask as he weaves us toward his truck.

“The hospital.”

“What? Why?”

He stops for a mere second and looks me straight in the eyes. “Hunter’s been in an accident.”

THE FLICKER OF THEfluorescent light overhead is pulsating to the beat of my pacing.

Hunter. Accident. Emergency room.

Thanks to Will, we were able to get a police escort from the mansion all the way to Valor County Hospital, cutting the travel time in half. I couldn’t breathe, let alone think properly, as we zoomed down the interstate, each mile marker passing at an impossibly slow speed in my mind.

Get there faster. Drive faster!

I said a few prayers to my mom. Chants to my mama for my baby. I know she’s not a saint or miracle worker, but she’s up there somewhere, and our boy needs angels on his side.

I call my dad. He said Maisie drove Izzy to his house, and they’re having cocoa while they wait for news. Izzy won’t get on the phone. Dad says she’s shaken up and won’t speak.

Tara was able to fill me in on the few details she knew.

Hunter was in an accident outside of Tyler’s house. He was rushed to the hospital by ambulance. Tyler tried my cell, but I wasn’t answering. He then called Tara, who called Kent … and now, here I am with my shaking hands in my hair, waiting for someone to let me see my son.

Will walks over to me with his phone in his hand. “I spoke to the officer on the scene. Hunter was riding an ATV on Greenwood Place when a car made an illegal turn without stopping at the stop sign. Hunter was riding in the middle of the street when the driver slammed into him. He was wearing his helmet, but he hit his head hard when he was knocked off the vehicle.”

“Oh my God!” I cry out. “Was he responsive? Bleeding? Broken bones? Where was Tyler?”

“He was responsive when he got in the ambulance.”

“What about when he gotoutof the ambulance?”

Will shakes his head and clenches his jaw, as that’s all the information he has at the moment.
