Page 55 of Love… It's Messy

“Sorry. I took a very unique evening and made it passé.”

“Turns out, dinner is an optimal dating plan because everyone needs to eat. I’ve never been here before, so that’s a huge bonus. This place is stunning.”

“Food is amazing too. I mean, it’s not sandwiches, but they have an awesome seafood menu. I’ve been here for brunch a time or two, but hardly for dinner.”

“You picked the perfect venue,” Eric says.

I sit back in my chair and cross my legs, feeling right about my date with Eric, when my phone buzzes with a text. Seeing it’s from Luke, I open it to make sure everything is okay with Ainsley.

On the screen is a photo of Luke, Ainsley, and Joe, all wearing tiaras and holding teacups up to the camera. Well, Joe isn’t holding a cup, but he has one in front of him and looks none too pleased with the pink plastic crown on his small dome.

I bark out a laugh at the sight and look down at the comment.

Checking in to let you know the house isn’t on fire and only mild profanity has been used. By Joe. He’s a bastard of a cat.

I hit reply.

Please let Joe know he’s in charge.

I trust him far more than I do his owner.

Make sure he stays out of my bed.

By “he,” do you mean me or Joe?

We need clarification as to who is allowed.

Neither of you.

Well … Joe is a cute snuggler.

So’s his owner.

Now, go back to your date.

I’m sure it’s riveting since you’re texting with me and not talking with him.

Beyond riveting.

He booked a helicopter to fly us to Manhattan.

Seriously?

Currently enjoying a bird’s-eye view of the sunset.

Fuck.

Language, Luke.

Fuck me.

“Everything okay?” Eric asks, drawing my attention back to him and away from my phone.

I place my phone back in my purse. “Good. Just an update on Ainsley. I’m all yours now.”

He grins. “I like the sound of that.”

Three hours later, Eric pulls the car up to my house. I spent the past forty minutes wondering about the inevitable after-date question:Will I let Eric kiss me?
