This heart of mine is going to be the death of me. He makes me even angrier, how he has an effect on me. My hands shake, I feel as if I downed five bottles of energy drinks.

My gaze shoots daggers at him. “What is that, exactly? Me trying so hard to not choke you to death?”

He chuckles, and his smile is radiating.

“I hope you are laughing at the audacity of you thinking you can keep me as the girl you fuck. I have to continue dinner with my friend. I’ll see you in the morning.”

As I stomp back to my table, he gently yanks me by the forearm. My spine prickles. My core tingles. My nipples harden. Any minute now, I’m going to burst into flames. For fuck’s sake, my body is behaving like a horny teenage girl. One little touch shouldn’t have me on the verge of spiraling out of control.

“Wait,” he beseeches. “One dinner, Saturday at eight o’clock.”

“You’re persistent. No wonder you’re a great CEO.” Sarcasm drips from my words.

“I want you.”

I want to respond with ‘I want you too’, but I can’t find myself saying it. And I’m tired of fighting what I want, but I have to do what’s best for me.

“I’m really not looking for something serious,” I shoot back.

“I’m not either. I want something fun and casual. My career will always be my top priority.” He sighs.

His ambition is turning me on even more, and it’s one of the features I do like about him. We both want something out of life, and he never wants to stop excelling.

“Me too. Which is why I don’t need the distraction.” I break my arm out of his grip, scurrying back to my table, and Jasper stands up from my seat.

He tells me he’ll see me at work, and he goes to sit back at their table.

I flop down on my seat. “What did Jasper want?”

“He wants to go out on a date with me, but I told him no. I’m not bringing anyone to my drama with Link. What about Atlas?”

I want to tell her to go on a date with Jasper and leave Link’s sorry ass alone.

I pour myself a glass of wine. “He wanted to have dinner. He wants something casual because of his job.”

I try not to stare in the direction of his table, but I can’t help myself, and Atlas is staring straight back at me. My cheeks burn, so I glance away.

“I find it ironic how you and Atlas are alike.”

I sip my wine before asking, “How so?”

Her shoulders relax. “You’re both ambitious, driven, and persistent when you want something.”

He’s like night; I’m like day. We don’t mesh well. He’s charming, and I can’t charm a person to save my life. He’s outgoing, and I’m more of an introvert.

I shake my head. “We’re only career-driven.”

“You have dinner with him. Have fun. It won’t be serious.”

I shake my head. “You go on a date with Jasper, then I’ll have dinner with Atlas.”

“You’re an evil woman, and no.”

I smile. My phone pings with a message, and Atlas’s name pops up on the screen.

Arrogant Asshole: Whether you want to admit it to yourself or not, you’re mine.

I hate my job. I never thought being an EA for Atlas would make me despise him even more. I didn’t finish my work until midnight, so I’m cranky, hungry, and pissed off. I don’t like working at home, and I don’t like him calling me in the middle of the night about an email. He’s a workaholic. Atlas breathes, eats, and sleeps his job. Even though the pay is good, it’s not worth it. When we enter the meeting room, people stop chattering, glancing at us as if we’re a freak show.
