She flattens out her short crimson dress. “I have an extra invitation to give to Atlas, if you want him to come as your plus-one.”

“You want me to use the invitation to make Carter mad?”

She nods and shrugs. “Why not?”

“I don’t care about Carter moving on. Besides, the best revenge is to not give a damn.”

“You’re right,” she says. “But still. It’ll be nice to see his reaction when he sees you on the arms of someone better-looking than he is.”

I laugh. “Petty.”

“I have no shame.” She twirls a lock of hair behind her finger. “I posted that picture of you and Atlas on my IG and Facebook story. I wanted to show Carter what he was missing out on when he left you. He sent me a message asking if you’re dating him.”

I roll my eyes. “What did you say?”

“I asked him why he cares, and he left me on Read.” She frowns. “You don’t treat my friend like shit and get away with it.”

I giggle. “Thanks?”

“Anytime, that’s what friends are for.”

It’s Monday morning and I have the biggest hangover ever. I had so much fun at Poppy’s party, I got carried away and lost track of time. We went to a club and had male strippers in the VIP section. I came home at three in the morning and only slept until six. My eyes hurt from the bright light as I stride inside, and my head pounds as if someone has beaten me in the head with a skillet.

Holding my breath, I waltz into Atlas’s office and set his coffee down on his desk. Today, his white dress shirt is snug against his firm torso, and the sleeves are rolled up to his elbows, exposing his muscular arms. The man knows how to make a simple dress shirt look sexy.

Atlas leans back in his executive chair, and says, “You’ve been avoiding my calls. Where were you on Sunday? I checked in with your doorman, and he told me you haven’t been home all night.”

My head throbs harder, and warmth spreads to my neck and cheeks.

I flop down in the chair across from him, resting my head on his desk. “Will you stop yelling?”

He ignores me. “Why are you avoiding me?”

“I’m not,” I snap.

“Are you hungover?”

“Yes. I had a girls’ night and had too much to drink. Can you lower your voice?”

He folds his arms across his chest. “I’m not yelling, Boots. You haven’t answered my question.”

“I was busy, and I wasn’t ignoring you. Do you have any medication I can take?”

He opens his drawer, unscrews a bottle of Advil, and sets two brown pills on the desk. Standing up from his desk, he strides to his mini fridge to retrieve a water bottle and sets it in front of me.

“Really? Because when I sent you text messages you left me on Read, and I called you three times. You sent me straight to voicemail.”

I have been avoiding him. He’s been kind and nice to me, and I don’t know how to handle it. This is all new to me. The relationship I have with him. I never thought we would be here with me crushing on him, but that’s where it needs to stay.

He shakes his head. “You play too many games with me. And I don’t like it.”

I snatch the two pills and place them in my mouth. Unscrewing the bottle, I chug down the water. “I’m not playing games with you.”

“You’re the only woman I allow to treat me like shit.”

“What that’s supposed to mean?”

He paces the floor, yanking a fist full of his hair. “I go out of my way to make you happy, and you act like you don’t care. I always agree to your terms and leave the ball in your court, but you never consider what I want. I try to get close to you, and you keep pushing me away. My patience is running thin with you, Lake.”
