I don’t like her mentioning his name with Lake’s, but I’m trying to figure out where she’s going with this.

“I knew she loved you because the minute you broke up with her, she came straight to me in tears not knowing what to do. She was like a lost soul that had lost their soul mate.” Tears wet her eyes. “Do you realize how much you hurt her? I don’t think she will give you a second chance. Besides, I like the new Lake.”

My eyebrows climb up my forehead. “What do you mean?”

“She’s not the same person after you broke up with her, she’s different. It changed her. She’s reconnecting with the person she was before the car accident. She seems like she’s a lot happier with herself now than she was, and I don’t want you to ruin that for her.”

“Please, you’re my last hope, Poppy. I’ll never hurt her again the way I did before. You have my word.”

“Words don’t mean shit to me. I want to see action. What is your plan to get her back, Atlas?”

“Telling her how I feel.”

“I knew you were arrogant, but goddamn, this is horrible. How are you going to woo her? And, I’m not talking about some damn lavish gift either. She’s not materialistic. You can’t win her over with shiny gifts. If you come up with something, then I’ll give you her address. And if your plan fails, I’m not taking the blame for telling you where she’s at.”

I hold my head up high. “I’m going to stay with her until she realizes I’m hers. I’ll spend the rest of my days waiting on her, proving to her how much I love her. Whatever it takes.”

“I’m serious, Atlas. If you hurt her again, I’m going to kill you. I’ve watched enough serial killer documentaries to know how to kill someone and hide the body so it won’t be found.”

I nod, pretending to take her idle threats seriously. “Did she leave already?”

“She left two hours ago, I drove her to the airport.”

She grabs her phone from her pocket and types before my phone buzzes with a message.

I look at the message—it’s Lake’s address.

I thank her and once I’m in my car, Thomas takes me back to my penthouse. I place the laptop on my lap and look up the address to where she’s at. It’s a little cottage on the island. I look for other cottages that are in her area and contact the real estate agent, a man called David.

“Are you sure you want to rent out the cottage without an in-person tour?” David’s tone is low.

“I trust the virtual walk-through is accurate because if it’s not, I will be suing you.”

“Sir, I assure you it is,” he says.

“Okay, I’ll send you the deposit right now.”

I hit the End button and send him the payment. When he gets my email, he tells me he’s going to meet me at the house to give me the keys once I’m there.

I call my pilot to notify them I’m on my way so they get the private plane ready. I’m going to go get the girl I love, then I’m never going to let her go again.

Lake

Kauai is beautiful. One of the most beautiful places I have ever visited. When I walk into the cottage, it’s fully furnished, and the walls are painted baby blue and fresh paint fills my lungs. I roll my luggage to the bedroom and unpack my bags and place my clothes into the closet and the drawer, then I exhale and glance around at my vacation spot. I’m going to be away from the city noise and away from the gossip of my relationship with Atlas. Finally, I can have some peace of mind.

I go into the bathroom, wash my face, and run my fingers through my shorter hair.

The doorbell rings, and I slowly trail to the door and open it.

A woman wearing a crop top and booty shorts stands in the arch of the doorway with a bottle of wine in her hand and a cigarette resting between her plump lips. Her hair is styled in beach waves cascading down her shoulders.

“Welcome to the island.” She shoves the bottle of cheap wine in my hand.

I plaster a smile across my face. “Thanks.”

She puffs on her cigarette before dropping it to the wooden porch and stomping on the bud with her sneaker, then she holds out her hand. “I’m Ruby.”

I shake her hand. “Lake.”
