She clung to me.

No tears.

No sobbing.

Just silence.

She was in shock.

I lifted my phone, dialing Reed’s number first.

“Yo—”

“I need you to get me your best defense lawyer. Have them on standby.”

He didn’t falter. “Done.”

I hung up, knowing he’d understand an explanation right now was something I couldn’t give him. He’d get it.

Then I punched in a new number, still holding Cassie close to my chest, not caring she was gripping tight to my white shirt with her bloody hands. Not giving a shit that she just fucking killed a man. Her ex-boyfriend, nonetheless. And not giving a fucking goddamn shit why.

I didn’t care.

All I wanted to do right now was protect her.

That was all I gave a fuck about.

“911, what’s your emergency?”

“I’m gonna need the police and an ambulance,” I answered, feeling her cling a little tighter. I didn’t know if she knew how much shit had just hit the fan in this room, but we were about to see just how far it fucking sprayed. “There’s been an attack, and someone is dead.”

CASSIDY

“At this stage, we aren’t looking at charging you,” the district attorney sitting across the table announced, leaning back in his seat. “There will still be an investigation, but due to the evidence you provided and your boss’s security cameras, it’s obvious you felt your life was threatened, and you didn’t intend to use deadly force.”

Katrina reached over and squeezed my hand.

She was my lawyer, the one I had no idea I had until we arrived at the police station and found her already here waiting to defend me with absolute conviction.

“Great, now if it hadn’t taken you three hours to come to this conclusion,” Katrina answered sharply, getting to her feet and holding her hand out to help me. “Cassidy can finally get to the hospital and actually get cleaned and stitched up.”

The man across the table let out a tired sigh as he shuffled his papers into his briefcase. He didn’t look like he wanted to be here anymore than I did. “You know how this goes, Kat. We have to collect evidence before I just let her walk out the door.”

“Yes, but my priority is this young woman’s well-being, so if you’ll notify the detectives so she can be released, that would be great. Thanks, Bill.” This woman was no-nonsense, no bullshit.

“I want to be you when I grow up.” I chuckled softly, wrapping my arms around me and shuddering as we walked out of the cold interview room. “Bill was out of his depth.”

Kat wrapped her arm around my shoulders and pulled me in, rubbing her hand up and down my arm. “Well, the evidence is clear as day. Thanks to your boss, it’s all on video. They’ll still do a more in-depth investigation, but I promise, if something comes up, I’ll be right there to help you fight it.”

“And you’ll send me the bill,” Drake announced, getting to his feet in the small waiting room, another man with tattoos crawling up his neck doing the same.

Drake hadn’t been allowed to come in with me, which at first caused me to panic. From the time he walked into the flower shop, I refused to let go of him. Not until we got to the police station, and they threatened to arrest me.

I couldn’t explain it if I tried.

I’d been in ambulances, hospitals, police stations, having to explain each cut or bruise or neighborhood disturbance. But this was the first time I hadn’t had to do it on my own. It was the first time I felt like I could hand over everything to someone else. Someone I could trust to protect me, to do what was best for me.

Why did I feel that way?I had no damn idea.
