When I meet his gaze again, the frosty look changes as he arches his brow, his smile predatory and his gray eyes sinister.

His gaze slowly peruses every inch of my body as though he’s undressing me with his eyes. My entire body burns beneath the weight of his gaze, and I fight the urge not to fidget and squirm.

When his eyes meet mine again, his lips curl into a cocky smirk that makes me melt like butter beneath the hot Texas sun. Those piercing gray irises study me like a predator analyzing prey, looking for a weakness to exploit.

My mother makes the introductions, her shrill voice like nails on a chalkboard. “Evan, this is my daughter, Alexis. Lexi, this is Evan.”

Evan grasps my barely outstretched hand, squeezing my fingers and exerting his dominance. The scent of warm amber cologne infiltrates my senses, suffocating me as his smoky eyes bore into mine. “It’s a pleasure.”

Pasting a fake smile on my face, my muscles and spine are rigid. “Likewise.” I try to pull my hand away, but his grip tightens, holding onto me for longer than necessary before finally releasing me.

“Your mother tells me you’ve always dreamed of attending Groveton College.” Preston’s deep voice commands my attention.

I shoot my mom an annoyed look. “Yes, but she knows it’s just that—a dream. I can’t afford it.”

Preston makes a noise that has Evan jerking his head toward his father. His gaze narrows as he studies him, his eyes shrewdly accessing.

Ignoring Evan, Preston nods, the smile on his face conveying he knows something I don’t. “Welcome to my home, Lexi. After dinner, I’ll give you a tour.” He pulls the cuff of his shirt back, looking at his expensive watch. “Let’s head to the dining room. The staff has made a special dinner. I’ve asked them to prepare some hors d’oeuvres. Your mother assured me you’ll be pleased with our selections.”

“Yes, I’m sure,” I lie, my eyes flicking to my mother. She shoots me a warning look, but I don’t give a rat’s ass. My eyes narrow on her. The woman barely knows me. She’s too busy with her career and Preston Whitmore to give me any real attention.

My mom links her arm through Preston’s, and they smile at me and Evan before leading the way. Evan holds his arm out to me, but I scoff and follow behind them. Grabbing my arm, Evan jerks me to a stop, wrapping my arm through his.

“Stop fighting me. Don’t you want to make a good impression on my father and please your mother?”

“Not really,” I quip.

Evan raises his brows, looking impressed for a few seconds before he glares at me. “Act the part of the dutiful, respectful woman. It’ll get you much further than your defiance will.” Tugging me to his side, he pulls me along behind them.

I can’t help the shiver that rolls through my body. Although I despise his cockiness, there’s no denying Evan is sexy as hell. My spine stiffens, hoping he doesn’t notice my reaction to his nearness.

He smirks down at me before leaning close to my ear. “Do I make you shiver, Lexi?”

Fuck. Why does his voice and the warm puff of his breath against my skin affect me like this?

“More like make me vomit.” I grit my teeth so hard I’m surprised they don’t crack.Damn traitorous body. Stop it.

Evan chuckles, but there’s a menacing quality to his voice when he speaks. “You’re a beautiful liar.”

I stared up at him in stunned surprise. Why the hell does he sound so suspicious, like I’m the enemy? He doesn’t even know me.

I give him a fake smile, my voice syrupy sweet. “And you’re a devious bastard.”

UNEXPECTED SURPRISES

Evan

“Oh, I’m only nineteen.” Lexi waves her hand at the tray of champagne the staff member holds. “I don’t drink.”

I take a sip of my champagne, a bemused expression on my face at Lexi’s failed, innocent act. I don’t buy it for one fucking moment. Just because Lexi wasn’t born wealthy doesn’t mean she isn’t like the others in my world—selfish and dishonest.

Lexi is providing me with some much-needed entertainment. Rocking back on my heels, warmth radiates through my body as she tries to ignore me. Her wide-eyed, fish-out-of-water look that she’s perfected is Emmy-worthy. I wonder how many hours she practiced that look in the mirror? If she’s like Jenna Astor, my on-again and off-again booty call I play with whenever I get bored, at least a few days.

Sipping water from a champagne glass, Lexi stares at my father and her mother, looking bored out of her mind. She’s acutely aware of my presence, though. Her body tenses every time I move, a scared little bunny afraid the big bad wolf will eat her.

My gaze travels over her curves. She radiates the naïve schoolgirl look, but I’ll bet she’s a freak in bed. My cock thickens inside my pants at the thought of her beneath me, writhing around my cock.

Setting my empty glass on a table, I saunter in her direction, bored with the game she’s playing. The closer I get, the more her body tenses. It’s highly amusing, and I puff out my chest, my heart rate rising from the adrenaline coursing through me.I’ll bet she’d give one helluva blow job.
