Evan’s probably just playing you, Lexi. Just like Shane.

My heart splinters, then breaks as I run down the hallway. The pain inside my chest outweighs the pain in my feet.

My earlier thought was right.Evan is making my life hell.

BURN ME TO ASHES

After rushing home and changing, I threw some clothing in my duffle bag and called Sophia. When she answered, I said, “Can I stay with you tonight?”

“Of course, Lexi. Anytime.” Her voice lowers. “I take it you and Evan haven’t resolved your issues?”

Impatiently whipping the tears away, I shake my head, even though she can’t see me. “No.”

Blowing out a breath, I tell her what he said, then about Jenna randomly stopping by.

Sophia is silent for a few beats. “Listen, Lexi, I know you’re hurting, and I don’t blame you. I know things went south after you had sex with Evan. With that being said, the two of you need to talk without interruptions. I don’t want to sound like I’m on his side or anything, but he was distraught over you walking out of the room with Bennett.”

“Good.” Even as I say it, there’s a pang in my heart. “Maybe he shouldn’t ignore me and then act all possessive.”

“I agree. But I caught the end of that show in the hallway. You like Evan’s possessiveness. I saw the fire in you inside the classroom when Evan demanded you speak to him, then again when Evan went after you while Bennett was talking to Braydon.” She chuckles. “I couldn’t hold Evan back anymore. He was like a wild animal.”

I know she’s right. Evan’s caveman behavior sparks something primal in me. Something I thought an independent woman like me would scoff at. Instead, it makes me wanna climb him like a stripper pole and ride him until his dick is chaffed.

But he hurt me. And this thing with Jenna…Fuck, I can’t breathe.

“Take some time and think things through, okay? Stay with me tonight and see how you feel in the morning.”

“Thanks, Sophia. I have a night class. I’m hoping it ends before 9, but who knows?”

“Don’t sweat it. Come over when your class ends.”

“Thanks. I’m gonna head to the coffee shop, then hide in the library.”

“I have a better plan. Meet me at the coffee shop, and we’ll have lunch and talk.”

“Ohh, I like that plan.” I wipe the tears from my eyes, straightening my spine. “I’ll see you soon.”

Sophia and I are heading to our 1:00 p.m. Biology class with Dr. Huntley. Biology is one of my weakest subjects, and the threat of a low grade in this class has me on edge. It doesn’t help matters that Huntley seems to hate me because of my last name.

A memory of that exchange during our first class has butterflies flapping in my stomach.

Huntley introduced himself and then took role call. He was steadily moving along, firing names off, but suddenly paused for a few beats before calling out, “Alexis Morgan-Whitmore.” The way his voice said Whitmore made me cringe. It was as though he’d eaten something bad.

I raised my hand and said, “It’s Alexis Morgan.”

Huntley’s brows lowered as he looked at his laptop screen, then back to me. “That’s not what it says on my sheet.”

I sighed. “That’s because my stepfather insisted I use his last name.”

“Ah, I see.” He glowered at me for a moment, making me squirm. “So, you’re Preston Whitmore’s stepdaughter.” The muscles in his jaw twitched as he stared at me with hatred in his dark eyes.

“Not legally. But he married my mom.”
