“Do you have the Ghostface mask with you?”

A smile blooms across Evan’s chiseled face. “I do. It’s in the car.”

My heartbeat quickens inside my chest. “Get it.” Dropping his hand as we reach the car, I giggle and open my mouth, but Evan’s grip on my arm stops me.

He cocks an eyebrow. “I’m still all worked up, Lexi. My head was in a dark place back there—”

I cut him off. “I know. I want your darkness. I can handle it.” My hands curl against his shirt, fisting the fabric.

“Are you sure, bellissima? I’m not going to go easy on you at all. I may hurt you.”

I’m shaking my head before he finishes. “You won’t hurt me. You know my limits and would never push me over them. I trust you completely.”

Evan’s smoky eyes darken as he intently observes me, allowing me to see the darkness inside him.

I’m not scared of who he is. I love all the broken pieces of this man, dark, light, and every shade in between.

Cocking my head, a challenge glints in my eyes. “Show me what you’ve got, stalker. You won’t hurt me.”

His composure snaps as quickly retrieves the mask before dragging me to the maze. He’s moving so fast I can barely keep up with his long, hurried strides. We twist and turn until, suddenly, we stop. I’m shrouded in darkness, large eerie stalks of corn higher than my head, preventing me from seeing anything.

My heart pounds furiously inside my chest as he turns and faces me, his face dark and hungry. I swallow hard, my confidence slipping a notch as he stares at me.

“You want my darkness, mi amore?” His voice is husky and sinister, causing a chill to race up my spine, goosebumps scattering over my skin despite the warm, humid air. “I’ll give you a five-minute head start.” His hands drop to his belt, the metal clanging as he undoes it, ripping it from his jeans. “If I catch you, I’m going to fuck you so hard the entire town will hear you scream.”

I stand there, my body shaking from adrenaline, waiting for my cue.

“Run, bellissima.”

I whirl around, my sneakers sinking into the earth as I propel my legs forward, running through the maze. It’s so dark out here, indicating we’re far from the entrance and the lights. The corn stalks are so high around me, looming over me like large hands about to grab and trap me in this creepy maze, never letting me go.

Determination, fear, and excitement course through my veins, my nerves lit up like the bright orange lights that hung around the entrance of the pumpkin patch. As much as I want Evan to catch me, I’m determined to outwit him.

The only problem is I have no fucking clue where I am. I can’t see anything as I run aimlessly, the stalks grazing against my skin, the scent of hay filling my nostrils. My breathing is loud and heavy, as are my footsteps, though I tell myself to be quiet so Evan can’t hear me.

My heart stops as I reach a dead end. My sweaty shirt sticks to my back as I spin around, trying to be quiet. Turning around, I make it out and turn right, confident I’m on the right path. Elation fills me as I increase my pace. I turn left, the stalks hitting my damp, sweaty skin, and—fuck, no. Another dead end.

Frustration fills me. Putting my hands on my head, I suck in a deep breath.

Calm down, Lexi. Don’t let the frustration get to you.

Giving myself a few beats to get myself under control, I continue, my hand over my mouth to stifle the ever-present scream ready to fly out as the tall corn stalks blow in the gentle night breeze. Goosebumps cover my arms as my eyes strain to see clearer in the darkness.

Once I find the path, I take a deep breath, weighing my options. A snapping sound, as though someone is approaching, comes from my left, so I take off on the right path, my arms and legs pumping as I run.

Fear and anxiety pump through my veins as I hear a sinister laugh. It may be my mind playing tricks on me, or Evan has caught up to me, or…no, don’t go there.

I run without conscious thought or direction, making random turns when I realize I’ve hit another dead end.

“No,” I whisper, my hands going through my hair.

I spin around, and my heart stops. My body trembles from the terror washing over me.

A shirtless Evan wearing the Ghostface mask stands less than six feet away, the muscles in his arms and torso flexed.

The predatory look in his eyes kicks my adrenaline higher. Desire lights up my nerves as I stare at him before my gaze drops to the belt in his right hand, fear and excitement making my body hum.

“Hello, Lexi.” His voice is deep and full of danger and lust.
