“When my time got cut short by diapers, mixing formulas, and emergency doctor visits. You know how it is. Can I ask you a stupid question?”

“Why not? I’m pretty sure I can’t stop you.”

“Why a fox costume?”

She stared at her son for what felt like forever and when her gaze returned to mine, regret flashed in her eyes. She blinked twice, and it was gone.

“The dinosaur costume had plastic claws hazardous to a child.” Her focus lifted from her son to me. “And he likes foxes. I guess he takes it after his Mama.”

Was that an olive branch?

“Are you married?”

She recoiled back. Maybe it was the wrong olive branch?

“How did you come to that conclusion?”

“Well, you have a kid, and you certainly don’t look interested in me, so I’m assuming you’re happily married to Ozzy’s father.”

“Eighty percent of single mothers are happier single than married. So no, I’m not married.”

I laughed. A car horn sounded in the distance.

“So you’re single?”

“Technically, yes. I am. But I’m not dating. The breastfeeding and bra pads scare men off.”

“So the boyfriend doesn’t exist?”

She rolled her eyes. “No, he doesn’t.”

“I’m not asking to get into your bra. We’ll leave that to the second date.”

“Since when do you leave bras and panties to second dates? And how is a second date possible when I haven’t agreed to the first one?”

“You haven’t kicked me to the curb yet.”

“That’s hard to do when we’re already outside.”

“Next time I’m next to you, I’ll make sure we’re inside and alone.”

I stepped forward, but she stretched out her hand, stopping me

She stopped the swing’s momentum. “Flirting with me is dangerous, James.”

“Colorado was dangerous.”

A spark flashed in her eyes.

“It was also special and I’ll never forget it.”

She shuddered. “I don’t have time for players in my life.”

“Why do you think I’m a player?”

“Oh, Fox? Fox!”

Fuck.
