“It was a gift from your parents at birth. It was our only connection, and it’s how we found your girl.”

“What? I thought—”

“Come inside, baby.”

I opened the car door and walked around the front to help her out. She secured the box underneath her arm and barely held herself steady, focusing on the home’s entrance. I helped her down the path and led her to the partially open front door. Her knees wobbled with each shaky step. I pushed the door open and met my father in the foyer. He checked his watch.

“What’s wrong?” I asked.

Laura slipped out of my grasp.

“She’s not here yet. She’s running late.”

I checked my watch. Tiffany never ran late.

“Did you call?”

“Of course I called. Four times. She’s not answering. She’s probably driving.”

I pulled my fingers through my hair.

“Who?” Laura asked, but I was already on my phone, calling Tiff’s number.

The doorbell chimed through the house, and the ominous sound set me on alert. Then my phone screamed with an ear-pearling tone, followed by my father’s phone and everyone else’s. I shook my head in denial as my father opened the front door to a police officer.

“Mr. James Silver?”

“Yes, that’s me.” I stepped forward.

“Ms. Tiffany Miller has sent me.”

“Where is she? What happened?”

A chorus of phones rang with the ear-pitching sound of an Amber alert.

“Ms. Miller is at home, but your daughter, Kensi Silver, is missing.”

“What?”

“No!”

I whipped my body around as the shriek echoed through the house. My mother rushed to Laura’s side as her knees buckled and she collapsed to the floor. I bolted to her side on the floor, lifting her into my arms.

“It’s Kensi? It’s Kensi?” she screamed, her body convulsing in my arms.

“Yes, it’s Kensi. Kensi’s your daughter.”

I expected Laura to collapse again. Instead, she swept away the tears and shot up to her feet. “We have to find her. Now.” She spun in a circle.

“We will. I’m going over to Tiffany’s right away.”

“I’m coming with you.”

“Hold on. I need my other phone. I can track—”

“Go, go, go.” She pushed me toward the staircase.

The house turned into a hive within seconds. Emma came to watch Laila and Foxy while my mother helped Laura gather herself upstairs. I turned on the tracking app on Kensi’s phone, but her backpack was at home, and she wasn’t. Tiffany arrived as soon as I came back downstairs. Mascara streamed down her face. Her nose was red and her eyes swollen practically shut from crying.
