She looked out into the distance. Darker clouds had closed in, and I was worried about James. He would be relieved to know Kensi was safe.

“You gave everyone a scare, Kensi. Tiffany… I mean, your mom said you know better than to leave on your own.”

“This was an emergency.”

“How did you get inside the building, anyway?”

“My dad’s card. He leaves it around sometimes.”

“And how did you get to Manhattan?”

“I know how to use the train and the subway. Only two percent of kids my age know how to use public transportation.”

“You’re smart.”

“Daddy taught me.”

I checked my phone and found a message that they’d transferred James to Manhattan General.

“How about we go find your daddy?” I rose off the pillows.

“You know where he is? He missed Christmas.”

“Yes, I know where he is.” I stuck out my hand, and she slipped hers in mine. The touch brought peace to my heart. “And I promise your daddy won’t miss another Christmas with you.”

“And my mommies too?”

Her wide eyes waited for the right answer, so I smiled. “And you mommies too.”

She let go of my hand, scrunched up her blanket underneath her arm, and resumed our hold.

“Laura? Does that mean Foxy is my little brother?”

“Yes, it does.”

Her mouth stretched wide across her face. “Good, because I love him very much. Is Laila my sister?”

“Of course she is. She brought you a Christmas gift from Santa all the way from Austria.”

Her steps picked up with mine, along with a hop. We took the elevator downstairs and walked the three blocks to Manhattan General. A new text came in that Tiffany and Jacob had arrived at the hospital.

“Your grandfather told me you go hunting with him. Is that true?”

“Yes, but Mommy doesn’t like to go. She went once and the mosquitos bit her, but grandpa said that’s because she wore underwear in the woods.”

“Mommy wore underwear in the woods?”

“No, but her shorts were very, very short, to impress daddy. That’s what Grandpa said.”

“Aha. Hey, do you think I could go hunting with you sometime?”

“I don’t know.” Her nose wiggled. “Hunting can be dangerous. There are guns involved.”

“I was a police officer before I came to work for your daddy, and I had a gun.”

“You had a gun?” Her eyes grew wide.

“Yes, but I didn’t need to use it. Smart people know when to use weapons.”
