“Maybe something with their birthstones?” I lifted my gaze to Laura’s.

“That would be nice, but maybe better to get Laila a bracelet similar to Kensi’s, so she doesn’t lose it.”

“Mommy, you measure your finger too.” Kensi pulled on Laura’s hand, holding it for the store clerk.

“What about Foxy? Should we get him a bracelet too?”

“James, he doesn’t need jewelry.” She chuckled. “He’s three.”

“You mean, he’ll be three next weekend.”

“Still not old enough to warrant a bracelet he might lose.”

“Kensi hasn’t lost hers since birth.”

“I’m not winning this one, am I? Fine. A bracelet for Foxy as well.”

“Are you upset with me?”

“No, I’m not. I just don’t see why a three-year-old should wear something so expensive. Sixty-eight percent of children in this country get spoiled and can’t learn how to fend for themselves when they’re thirty.” Her eye twitched.

“How about this one?” I slipped a diamond over her ring finger, and she covered her mouth with her free hand.

“James…”

“I like the way it fits.”

I held her hand and watched as she twisted it in the light. The diamond caught streams of light, reflecting rainbow sparks on the counter’s glass surface.

“Me too,” she whispered.

“Mommy, look at my bracelet. Now I have two.”

Laura took the ring off her finger, returning it to the clerk.

“It’s beautiful, Kensi. It has your birthstone. Give your daddy a big hug.”

Kensi thrust her arms up in the air, and I lifted her up, holding my girl tight against my chest.

“You got it?” I whispered in her ear.

“I do.”

I paid for the purchases, and we headed back to the house, picking up a bouquet of wildflowers on the way. We crossed behind my parents’ property to mine.

“What’s that?” Laura pointed to the blanket near the docks.

“I thought we could have a picnic with the kids.”

“When did you get that ready?”

“When you weren’t looking.”

The bright summer sun shone over the bay. We parked the strollers and let the kids out. Foxy found a ball and kicked it away, giggling. Kensi ran after him, and Laila followed Kensi. I helped Laura down to the blanket and removed the champagne from the cooler.

“What are we celebrating?” she asked.

“A beautiful day.”
