“Come here.” He grabbed my hand, pulled me off my seat, and brought me down on the couch beside him. “Lie down.”

He gently pushed on my shoulder, and I lowered to the cushioned seat. He drew his hands over my thighs, down my shins and to my foot. The delicate touch over my right sent shivers up my spine. My breaths quickened as his thumb pressed into my sore soles, numbing my body and mind.

I lifted my head. “What are you doing?”

“Trying to relax you, but I’m not sure that’s possible. Lie back.”

“I can relax.” I shot up, and he chuckled, guiding me back to the couch. He lifted my foot into his hands and kneaded the sole. My muscles went limp as his expert fingers pushed underneath, working through the tightness.

“I’ll miss work if you keep this up.”

“How so?”

“You’re putting me to sleep.”

“Words every man wants to hear. Allow me to correct my mistake.” He drew his hands higher to my calves and pushed through the muscle. He slowly dragged his fingers along my flesh, over the knee to my thigh.

I bit my inner cheek and my eyes flew open. “What have you been doing? How’s Silver Securities?”

He lowered his hands back to the safer spot below the knee.

“You’re aware your friend is working for us?”

“All I know is that Allie’s on a secret assignment. We don’t share intel details.”

“Do you miss working with her?”

“Like a pair of well-worn shoes. She had my back, and I had hers. They haven’t assigned me a new partner yet, and I’m doing paperwork. God knows how long they’ll keep me. I’ve had one too many strikes against me at work.”

“You can only move up from there.”

“I doubt it. It was easier with Allie. She had my back.” I closed my eyes for a longer pause. “I missed my noon shift today. Fo—ozzy had his accident at the park, and I had to call in.”

“They should understand because accidents happen.”

I opened my eyes. “Not five times in a month. I’m a great cop, but my son’s a priority, you know.”

“I know, but you must be tired because you’re calling your son Fozzy.”

He was right. I had nearly slipped, and I couldn’t let it happen again.

“I’m sorry things didn’t work out with Tiffany.”

“Thanks. Building trust is hard. Fixing broken trust is even harder.”

I swallowed past the squeeze in my throat. “She broke your trust?”

“Tiffany poked holes in my condoms.”

My brows lifted.

“She surprised me in Colorado.”

“But you tried working things out?”

I knew they had. I’d seen so firsthand when I came back to tell him I was pregnant. They were a family, and I didn’t belong.

“We did, but you know what they say: once a liar—”
