I closed in. “How did it go with your parents?”

“You don’t look like you believe me.”

“Did you tell them about Ozzy?”

“Okay, there, Mr. FBI. What’s with so many questions? I had to leave early to pick up my son. I’m cleaning up my life, but there is a process to that.”

Her gaze slowly lifted to mine. Her large eyes were outlined with long lashes. Her confession sounded amazing, but I fucking couldn’t wait to shut her up. Right after she explained why she’d lied.

“I just had coffee with your parents,” I said. “We had a lovely conversation.”

Her backbone straightened and the fierce woman who’d arrested me snapped back to life, whipping out her protective shield.

“You did what?”

“I had to interview them. For your job at Silver Securities.”

Her brow lifted. “You were snooping.”

“The more important point here is you lied to me. Why did you lie?”

“You told them I’ll be working for you?” She ignored my question.

“For me, with me, underneath me. Yeah, I covered all that. Did you know my parents know yours? Doctor Young, your father, operated on my father.”

“Of course I knew. How do you think I got the nutcracker job in Colorado?” She chuckled, but her eyes held a semi-distant look. “My father saved your father’s life. I guess your parents felt they owed them a favor.”

“So my father’s bad heart is the reason I met you?”

Amusement rippled across her face. Finally. I wasn’t sure how long I could keep this elevator stuck between the third and fourth floor before someone called the fire department.

“It’s like we were meant to be.” She shrugged. “Sixty-eight percent of people meet their partner through an acquaintance.”

“Partner?” I stepped closer and gripped her hips. “Is that what I am to you? A partner?”

Her shoulder lifted in a quick shrug. “I’m not sure what you are, yet, Fox Silver, but you’re definitely something.”

My mouth closed in on hers.

“I prefer it when you call me James,” I whispered against her lips.

“But Fox sounds sexy, especially when Tiffany says it?”

I yanked my head back. “Are you jealous, Ms. Young?”

Her lips rolled inward, and she made a pinch with her forefinger and thumb. “Possibly? A little?”

“Does that mean the answer to my job offer is yes? I must warn you, you’ll be on my call day and night.” A rush of adrenaline flew through my veins.

“You believe I could get a better offer?”

“Tell me what you want and I’ll make it happen,” I said.

“Stay alive this coming weekend, and we’ll talk after then.”

She pulled away. I groaned and pressed the emergency button again. The elevator brakes let go, and we descended to the garage.

“I don’t understand why we have to be stuck in an elevator to have a decent conversation. Did I fuck the wrong way? Because I don’t make a habit of sleeping with women I’m not interested in.”
