He was hitting the nail on the coffin.

“Stop overthinking or you’ll get a headache. Your parents should be back soon.”

“You called them?”

“If you get to have private chats with my parents, I get to call yours when you pass out.”

He grunted. “Fair enough. My mother will not let me out of her sight.”

“Maybe that’s a good thing. It’s time someone took care of you for a change.”

“I’d prefer my girlfriend’s soothing hands on my dick. Now, that’s care.”

“If you don’t recall, the last time your girlfriend took control, she broke you.”

He laughed and winced in pain. “Ouch. You didn’t rupture my spleen.”

“I don’t know. We were pretty rough.”

“Baby, that was only a prelude, and I excel at symphonies.”

Warmth pooled in my nether regions, and my insides tingled. But it would likely be a while before we could pick up where we left off.

“Then you better get well soon,” I whispered, and kissed him on his forehead. “I’ll go get the doctor and will be back this afternoon.”

“You’re busy. There’s no need.”

“I’ll be back, James. I’m not subjecting you to hospital food.”

“I don’t mind.”

“Then how about I come back for me because I can’t stand being away from you? The girls should be here soon as well. I let Tiffany know about the surgery.”

“Thank you.” He yawned and closed his eyes.

I left as soon as the doctor came to check on him, and drove to pick up Foxy from the Silvers. On my way home, I bought a potted hibiscus for my mother and my dad’s favorite rum, but I didn’t expect I’d be the one needing a drink.

The weekend arrived too quickly. They released James from the hospital, and he was recovering at home without complications. I stood in front of my parents’ house in the Hamptons and shifted from one foot to another. Allie sat with Foxy in the car, waiting for my text to bring him inside. I lifted my hand to the doorbell and lowered it again.

“I can do this. I can do this,” I chanted in my head. They couldn’t disown me, and if Teresa was right, Foxy was missing out as much as his grandparents were. Maybe so was I.

I pressed my finger on the doorbell and listened to the elongated chime. My mother opened the door.

“Hi, Mom.”

“Laura, it’s so good to see you. Come in.”

“Is Dad home?”

“Yes, he’s in the kitchen. We ordered sushi.”

I stayed in my spot.

“Well, come on in, honey. This is still your home.”

“I hope you feel the same way once you hear what I have to say.”
