“Yes, just thinking.”

“So, tell us more about Foxy.”

I cracked a smile. “You want to know about his father?”

“I don’t want to pry, but is he present in your life? I mean, I know you’re dating. How does James feel about this?”

My father came inside to get a popsicle for Foxy.

“You’re not prying, and you deserve an answer. I’ve complicated my life more than I wanted to. You know how I’ve kept Foxy from you?”

My father stopped at the door and turned back around. Air whistled through my mother’s throat. “Oh, Laura, please tell me you didn’t.”

“I’m one heck of a smart daughter, aren’t I?”

“But why?” she asked.

“I thought he was married, and I was mistaken. I jumped to conclusions.”

“The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree,” my father grunted. He seemed off today, and I couldn’t understand why. From the moment we came inside and he pulled my mother aside, I had the feeling they wanted to say something and didn’t know how.

“Is he a good man?”

“It’s James Silver.”

“Laura—”

“I know, I know. I’m going to tell him.”

“You gave his daughter your liver, didn’t you?” my father asked, and grabbed a beer from the fridge.

I nodded. “How could I not? I was a perfect match.”

My mother placed her hand over mine. “If James is as smart as I think he is, forgiving you should be easy.”

“You’re being nice. Why are you so nice? You hated me when I was pregnant.”

“It wasn’tyou, Laura. It was the situation. The pregnancy flipped your life upside down, and you were supposed to go to medical school—”

“You know, if my baby girl hadn’t died, she would be seven now. Foxy would have had a sister.”

My father lowered his beer and coughed into his hand. “I can’t do this anymore.”

“We can’t change what’s happened.” My mother’s voice lifted.

“Maybe we can.”

“Tom—”

“No, Alice. I think it’s time.”

My head flew from one to the other. “Mom, Dad—what’s going on?”

“You should probably sit down.” My father pulled out a chair.

During the next five minutes, my life was flipped upside down. That evening, I walked into James’s home a complete mess and collapsed into his arms, sobbing. My makeup ran down my cheeks as I pulled in the sniffles and finally calmed enough to answer his continued questions as to what happened.

“You know how you said you’d help me fix things?” I asked.
