“We’re taking the kids inside,” Teresa whispered. I handed Foxy over and walked three steps forward before I froze. James strode toward me, nostrils flaring and fury raging. He stomped through the foliage like an animal.

“Is it true?”

I jumped up, tears welling in my eyes.

“Oh, my God. It’s true. Ozzy… I mean Foxy is my son?”

It was over. While the tightness released from my chest, I couldn’t breathe. James was fuming. His face turned beet red and sweat dripped down his forehead.

“You can’t even fucking admit it!”

I jumped up, and Jacob’s booming voice sounded from across the patio. “James!”

“How could you do this to me?”

“You had a family,” I stuttered. “I didn’t want Foxy with someone who couldn’t be there full time.”

He leaned forward, spewing breath from his nose. “And what gives you the right to decide whether I’m a fit father? You don’t even fucking know me!”

“James!” Jacob’s heavy steps boomed across the deck as he approached us.

“I’m sorry.” My vision blurred, and I wiped the tears away.

“You’ve stolen my son’s first two years from me. I trusted you like I never trusted anyone before.”

“James—”

“I can’t stand looking at you. I will never forgive you for this.”

Jacob grabbed his son’s arms, pulling him away, but James ripped out of his father’s grip.

“And you want my help to find your daughter? You make me sick!”

“James, that’s enough.” His father stepped between us and physically pushed him inside the house.

I collapsed to my knees. Allie rushed to my side, helping me up.

“I want to go home.” I looked up.

“All right. I’ll get you home, honey.”

“No. I need to be where James can’t find me and Foxy. I’m going to the Hamptons with my parents.”

“You’re sure?”

I nodded. “I’m going to work online for a while.”

“Yes, of course. Take your time.”

“Thank you.”

She hugged me goodbye while my father secured Foxy in the car seat and my mother packed his bag. Teresa enclosed her arms around me like she never wanted to let go. “He’ll come around, Laura. Just give him some time.”

I hoped she was right, and prayed James had learned forgiveness from his mother. The question was, could I forgive him?
