“Boom,” he repeated, and my father entered the room.

“Laura? James is at the front gate.”

“What?” I shot off my chair.

“Should we let him in?”

“No. Tell him to leave. I don’t want to see him.”

“We did that an hour ago. He’s still there. He won’t leave unless you talk to him.”

It’s freezing out there.

I puffed out a frustrated breath. “It’s not happening.”

“He’s there with flowers.”

“Flowers? He thinksflowerswill fix everything? I won't have a man treat me the way he did.”

“You’re just being stubborn and unreasonable.”

“Am not.”

“Of course you are. Laura, you forgave us an unforgivable mistake. James was angry, rightfully so, just like you were when—”

“I’m not ready.”

My mother hopped into the conversation with even more bad news. “I opened the front gate.”

“What?”

“I couldn’t let him freeze out there, and it’s time you two talk. If not for you, do it for Foxy.”

The doorbell rang, and my parents stepped aside.

I set my cocoa on the table and stood up, shaking out my arms to get rid of the tension. It wasn’t working. I tightened my robe and slipped into my fluffy slippers. My hair resembled the same mess I was inside, but I cared little at the moment.

I lifted my chin just as the doorbell rang again. “Fine. I’ll see him. Stay with Foxy?”

My parents nodded, and I went to the front door.

James stood there holding an enormous bouquet of seasonal flowers in his arms, and another one was propped on the ground beside him. I mistakenly drew my gaze over his perfect look, and my knees softened. The long charcoal dress coat over a white sweater carried a vibe. A checkered scarf hung loosely around his neck. His beard was trimmed, and his hair fell to the side. For a moment, I forgot why I was so angry with him and remembered how much I’d missed him.

I pulled the door open wider and cleared my throat. “Come in.”

“Thank you for seeing me. These are for you.” He handed me the bouquet in his hands, and I set it on the hall table.

“And these are for your parents.” He placed the other arrangement on the floor underneath, followed by a few bags filled with what I assumed were Christmas gifts. I held back the smile.

“I thought you were in Austria.”

“I’m on my way to the airport right now. The pilot is on standby. I didn’t want to leave for Christmas without seeing you. Laura, thank you for what you did for Kensi.”

I held my breath.

“My mother told me,” he said.

“Right. You’re welcome. I’m happy the super liver is working.”
