“I thought I was dreaming. This isn’t a dream, is it?”

She paced along the wall of windows, chewing on her nails. There was so much I had to tell her. I’d made a mistake supporting Tiffany’s lies. Had I spoken sooner, perhaps Laura would have found her daughter earlier and had a chance as a mother. But Kensi loved Tiffany. She looked up to her mother like all seven-year-old daughters did. She was the only mother my girl had ever known. Still, Laura deserved the truth.

“No, you weren’t dreaming. The message is there.”

“We should fly back home now. Tomorrow. Please make it happen tomorrow.” Her hollow eyes begged. I would lose this fight if I lost her attention.

“You don’t want to miss your best friend’s wedding, babe.” I walked up behind her and wrapped my arms around her waist, staring at the snow-covered valley below. “How can I make you relax? We have time.”

I grazed my lips along her ear cartilage and down her neck, kissing the soft spot underneath her jawline. Emma was doing crafts with the kids. My mother was helping the chef, a family friend who catered our Christmas and wedding, in the kitchen, and my father was smoking a cigar outside with my uncle. Tristan had taken Allie out skiing. Laura’s best friend had no clue they were getting married on New Year’s Eve, and we had time alone.

“Is that a bruise?” She pointed to my arm.

“You roughed me up last night and the day before.”

“Me?” Her eyes twinkled.

“Yes, you.” I swept her hair off her neck for better access, but she pulled away.

”You can find the Millers, can’t you?”

It seemed my lips no longer worked on my woman.

“We should wait to hear from them and set up a meeting. What’s the point of finding their empty house while they’re on vacation? Besides, do you know how many Millers there are?”

She chewed on her fingernails, and I gripped her hand, cutting off access.

“Maybe you’re right. I just can’t wait.”

“You’ve been patient so far.”

“It’s a façade. Sixty-seven percent of people have a façade.”

I turned her around in my arms and lifted her chin. Her beautiful eyes met mine.

“I’m not used to being this broken.”

“The Millers…” I swallowed past the scratch in my throat, wondering whether she’d connected the last name to Tiffany. “They replied, which shows they have good intention. Yesterday we didn’t know if your girl was even alive…” My fucking throat tightened. I couldn’t wait to get rid of my own façade. “… and today we know she’s with a good family and they take care of her. They’re on Christmas holidays.”

My heart hammered in my chest, but she let go of the tension in her neck. “I guess that’s a good thing. Maybe you’re right, but you’re going to have to hold my attention, which won’t be easy—”

“Will my dick not do?”

She squirmed in my hold. “Alcohol and dick. Sounds perfect, but you need to be more creative.”

“More creative than orange chocolate?”

“Way more. Hold my attention.”

“Challenge accepted, Ms. Young. The kids are feeding the reindeers with my parents today. Julian’s out shopping with Kendra. Tristan’s romancing Allie, and… I’m just trying to say you’ll be able to scream.”

Blood rushed south at the thought of her voice singing as I brought her undone. Someone should have handcuffs in this house.

“How are your parents?”

She froze. “Oh, my God. I totally forgot to call. I saw the message, and I ran over and… I can’t think.”

“Okay, okay. Go call them now, and then meet me in the bedroom.”
