“You still could have warned me. I’ve never been near the cat. She loves you because you feed her.”

He burst out a laugh. “You’re so wrong about that. She’s been wanting to meet you since we came back.”

What?

“What about the father? She’s obviously pregnant. Is he around?”

“I’ve seen him, but Kali keeps him away from the house as well.”

“Any other cougars around here I should know about?”

“Only the beautiful one I’m looking at.”

He lowered his head to mine, and what began as an innocent kiss turned fervent within seconds. The fish flopped in his grip and jumped back in the water. He pulled away from my mouth.

“Great. Now we lost dinner.”

“You’ll catch another one. I think Kali’s in labor. I gave her some water.”

“You gave her water?”

I nodded. “She was panting. I think she may like me.”

His smile swung free. “What’s not to like?”

“You should check on her. Is this her first cub?”

“Yes, but she’ll be fine. She’s wild.”

I shook my head, and Hunter hooked my arm into his, helping me to the shore. We stopped by Kali, who was on her side again. She sniffed my foot and nudged her nose against my sandal, then turned sideways, glancing back at Hunter.

A sharp pain zapped from the bottom of my spine and to my belly. I gripped Hunter for support as it twisted around my stomach.

“Ahh,”

“You all right?”

Wet fluid leaked down my inner thighs, and I looked up with wide eyes.

“My water just broke.”

He looked down, as if to double check, and looked back up again. “Wait here, I’m gonna get the scooter.”

I gripped his arm before he could run off. “Hunter, I can’t ride the scooter now. And you’re not leaving me alone with a cougar in the jungle.”

Kali growled out in pain, her stomach visibly contracting.

“Rainforest.”

“Whatever. Ahhh,” A stronger squeeze tightened around my abdomen, strangling my breath. I bent in half, bracing myself on my knees.

“All right. Let me help you to the house, and we’ll figure out how to get you to the village. There’s a nurse there, and Abuela has delivered dozens of babies.”

I stopped, feeling another contraction coming on. They were too close. They weren’t supposed to be this close so soon, for a first baby.

“This is not part of my birth plan,” I screamed.

“That’s okay, Grace. I won’t leave your side, I promise.”
