“Are you ready to call it a night?” I spun her on the floor and brought her back to my body.

“We have guests. It’s not even midnight.”

“So 12:01?”

She giggled. A small boy ran up to me and tugged on my pant leg, looking up. We both looked down.

“Papi,” he said.

“What?”

“Papi.”

My head flew up to Grace. “It’s impossible.”

Her brows narrowed. “Just like me getting pregnant was impossible?”

“Hunter!”

Our heads shipped to Paula, who waved us over from underneath the fairy-lit tree.

Shit.

“Maybe you should sit this one out?” I stepped in front of Grace.

“And miss the part where she reveals he’s your son? No way. I’m your wife, Hunter. We’ve been through enough shit, and I’m ready to take on more, as long as you’re by my side.”

I took her hand. “All right. Let’s go.”

The music faded into the background. It felt like forever as we crossed the dance floor. Paula hugged Grace, congratulating her, then kissed me once on each cheek. “Felicitations, cariño.”

The boy tugged on my pants again. “Papi.”

“Qué pasa, Paula?” I asked.

She shrugged a shoulder, then burst out in laughter. “Estoy bromeando contigo. Kidding. I am joking with you.Es el hijo de mi primo.”

“Your cousin’s son? This is your cousin’s son? Paula, you almost gave me a heart attack.”

Grace laughed. She was laughing so hard, I couldn’t hold on to my anger.

“You know I’ll get you back for this.” I pointed, and she swatted my hand.

“Gracias, Hunter. Thank you for your help.” She turned us both away, pushing us back to the dance floor. “Go, dance.”

“What did you do?” Grace asked.

“Her cousin’s husband was killed before their son was born. I helped a little, that’s all. I’ve never seen the boy before, though.”

Grace smiled, and I cupped her face with one hand, brushing my thumb over her cheek. The gentleness in her eyes flooded with love.

“I thought you changed, Hunter, but you didn’t.”

“No?”

She shook her head. “You are the man who fixed my bike. The man who saved frogs from my pool and turned my weeds into a beautiful garden. Your loyalty and devotion were always there. You were a man before I saw you, and thank you for not giving up on me. Thank you for not giving up on us.”

I kissed her again, grateful I’d be able to do so for the rest of my life. Someone on the dance floor whistled. More whistles followed, but I could no longer hold back. My tongue swept over hers as I brought her body to mine. We pulled apart, her eyes begging and breath shortening. I bent down, tucked my arm underneath her knees, and swept her off her feet, carrying her away to our home to consummate our marriage.

If we made it that far.
