“It’s…it’s you.”

“Were you expecting a real caveman, Grace?” He stood up in what felt like slow motion, his full naked bear's body so close to my drenched skin that my thoughts vanished. My heart had lost its rhythm about a dozen times by then, and I could barely breathe.

“Wh…what are you doing here?” My lip quivered.

A ricochet of flying bullets blasted from somewhere inside the salon, and I jumped into his arms.

“Looks like I’m just in time.”

CHAPTER 3

HUNTER

“What’s going on?” Grace fumbled to get her glasses off the shower shelf, nearly dropped them, and set them on her nose. She hadn’t worn glasses before. Another gunshot went off and I whipped my head toward the second floor..

“Get your phone.” I grabbed her by her wrist and dragged her out of the shower. While I appreciated Grace’s steamy reception, her life was in trouble. Beth had told me that we had a few days before the Hartleys made Grace a target.

“The phone’s upstairs, and I’m soaked.”

I noticed. Her white shirt clung to her skin, outlining her lacey bra and pebbled nipples, messing with my concentration. I grabbed my joggers off the floor and slipped them on.

“What the hell happened to you, Hunter?”

“Not the right time, Grace.”

I took her hand and led her through the mudroom, where a fear-stricken client was clinging to the corner of the bath. A scream tore from the second floor, and she shuddered. I lowered to her ear. “You’re going to be all right. Stay quiet and don’t move. We’re gonna get help, but if anyone asks, you didn’t see us.”

She nodded eagerly. I grabbed a few cucumber slices off a tray and stuffed them in my mouth, pulling Grace along to the delivery door in the back.

“The door leads to the alley, and the alley leads to the front.”

“Grace, you need to trust me.”

She tugged on my hand, squeezing. “I can’t leave my employees.”

“Don’t worry, they won’t kill anyone because they’re looking for you, and once they realize you’re not there, they’ll leave.”

“Who’s they?”

“Chad Hartley’s goons. We need to get to the rooftop.”

“Why me?” She was shaking and looking around like she’d never been in her salon.

“Not the right time, Grace.”

“You’re going in your joggers? What about shoes and shirt?”

She was in shock.

“Better in my joggers than with a bullet in my chest. And I can run just as fine without shoes. Now, come on.”

I opened the back door, and we hurried to the metal staircase. The building was attached to a row of other buildings. We crossed the hot rooftop and scaled down the staircase at the side to where my brother had parked my car.

“You don’t have your clothes, but you have your Bugatti?”

“James dropped it off.”

I pressed my thumb to the door and opened the passenger side. Grace hopped into her seat, and I went around to the driver’s side.
