“I should check the news since I’m your prisoner.”

“I prefer ‘guest.’”

The first news channel blasted about the attack at Gracie’s.

“Wait, Grace.” I gripped her hand.

“Fine. Then tell me why you’re holding me here, and why the Hartleys are after me.”

I sat down on the bed beside her and turned down the television’s volume.

“There was a mistake in the will,” I lied. I’d promised to let Beth to tell Grace the truth on her own, and I didn’t break promises. Not anymore.

“Chad Hartley thinks you’re part of their estate settlement.”

“Why would they think that?”

“Because there was a mistake in Jeff Hartley’s will. Your mother’s working on it.”

“My mother?”

“It’s a sensitive matter, and she didn’t want to involve anyone else.”

“But she involved you.”

“I guess she knows what’s best for her daughter.”

She allowed a little smile, but just then a headline flashed across the screen’s bottom, drawing her attention.

ANOTHER MURDER LINKED TO THE HARTLEYS AT CENTRAL PARK

I watched as she focused in on the details. She clasped her hands over her legs and looked back at me with fear-stricken eyes. “Was that bullet meant for me?”

I didn’t reply.

CHAPTER 4

GRACE

Hunter shut the drapes, checked the door locks, and left to his room.

“Pffff.” I puffed out a breath of relief.

When I went to work this morning, I never imagined I’d end up in Hunter’s hotel room. I never imagined him back home again. I’d dreamt about it, but my dreams and reality rarely aligned.

I tossed and turned well past midnight, but sleeping was out of the question.

Hunter.

Hunter Silver.

Air whistled out of my lungs.

He’d morphed from a fit young man to a man. A bear. A deliciously warm bear who wrapped me into his body like I belonged there. His heat consumed me when he held me. I turned onto my right side while twisting the sheets. A sliver of moonlight peeked in between the curtains.

The flick of his night lamp drew my attention to the frosted glass door leading to his room. The shadow of his body crossed to the second washroom. I stayed still, secretly hoping he’d come in to check on me, but he didn’t. The faucet’s running water triggered another hot flash, reminding me of his shower, where he’d stood underneath the stream, his arm braced against the wall, rinsing his head.

I’d slept with Hunter many times. We’d made love, fucked, orgasmed, and conquered positions I’d never dreamed of. He’d never faltered, and the sex was great, but the new statue of muscles and strength underneath the shower stirred a fresh desire in my belly. I imagined the brute force of his body pressing me into the mattress, my skin yielding to his. I could orgasm just by looking at him.
