“Are you bringing someone?”

If Hunter agreed, I would have no choice but to bring him.

“Hunter. He insists on keeping me safe.”

“The Hartley fiasco?”

I nodded. “I should go. I believe your next appointment is waiting.”

His brows drew together. “I don’t have another appointment until lunch because I’m not supposed to be here until lunch. That’s why I could squeeze you in this morning. They’re likely here for a different doctor.”

“Thank you for all your help, and I’m sorry for taking up your morning.”

“This will be your third cycle, Grace, and you know what they say—third time’s a charm.”

I dressed and left the clinic with an overwhelming tightening in my chest. Loss, even though I had lost little, consumed me. I crossed the street to the coffee shop, picked up a vanilla latte, and was walking to the bagel store when I felt someone’s stare from across the street. A man stood in the sun’s glare, the hood of his sweatshirt covering his head. He scrolled through his phone, occasionally checking the traffic.

I picked up my pace, sneaking a peek at the man from the storefront’s reflection. The man crossed the street, nearly getting struck by a cab, and sped up his walk. I turned left into the first door and entered a business building. The corridor was empty, mostly. A stretch of offices ran along its length: insurance agency, real estate, lawyers. Unfortunately, no police, but a law office would do. I headed for Mercer & Williams’ legal offices, secretly hoping one of my brothers would be there.

I glanced over my shoulder and breathed with some relief when I didn’t see him anymore; but just then someone snagged my arm. A large man pulled me into a washroom corridor and clasped his gloved hand over my mouth.

CHAPTER 7

HUNTER

“Where is she, Emma?” I’d dialed my cousin’s number as soon as I’d realized Grace wasn’t taking a bath.

If I’m too late, I’m going to kill Emma.

“Where’s who?”

“I swear to God, Ems, if you don’t tell me right now, I’ll tell Julian you snuck out to see Eric Waters on his ranch.”

“If you do that, I’m going to tell Grace you still love her.”

“You won’t be able to tell Grace anything if you’re murdered. Where is she?”

Her breath rushed out with a grunt. “Fertility clinic. Her appointment should be over soon.”

I dialed Scar’s number next. He was closer to the clinic and could get to Grace quicker than I could. Fifteen minutes later, I pulled up to the curb by Mercer & Williams. Someone had parked an unmarked SUV across the street. I jumped out of the car and took the main entryway inside the building. Scar and Grace were standing in the main corridor, arguing.

“You could have said something instead of frightening me to death.” Her arms were flying around in the air as she spoke.

“You were supposed to stay in the house, Grace. With Hunter. It’s his job to protect you.”

I hurried toward them.

“And it’s your job to poke around my business and follow me?”

“I wasn’t following you—”

“We stay here one more minute and they’ll come inside,” I interrupted. “You shouldn’t have left, Grace. You’re being followed.”

She rolled her eyes.

“Yes, by my brother, and I don’t understand why.”

“I called Scar.”
