She took a cautious sip, then another, until she’d gulped half a glass. “Hunter, I don’t see a supply store for anything.”

I let out a deep-chested laugh.

“Come on, Grace. We have work to do.”

CHAPTER 10

GRACE

Heat nipped at my neck, and I covered myself with a shawl gifted from Abuela. After breakfast, we stopped by the local school, where Hunter played soccer with the kids for a bit. I sat on a bench watching them as a line of locals formed in front of me. The first older gentleman held a pair of scissors in his hands.

“Corte,” he said.

“Hunter! What doescortemean?”

But he couldn’t hear me. The gentleman snapped the scissors between his fingers and pulled on his hair with the other hand.

“Cut?” I asked, and he nodded.

More locals joined the line. I stood up. Someone had set a chair in front of me and I smiled. “All right. Sit,por favor.”

I clipped away, losing count after the fourteenth head, while the boys took Hunter across the street to a hut filled with scooters. He fiddled with the bikes, fixing them and starting up one after the other. Two hours later, he came back all greasy and sweaty. I’d styled eight women, including Paula’s younger sister, who, from what I gathered, was getting married within days. Hunter pulled his greasy hands through his hair. Sweat dripped down his chest. His arms bulged, and God, did he ever look hot. Paula brought out a tray of pineapple empanadas and stuck one into his mouth. Jesus, was she ever sexy.

“Come, mi amor.”

He took a bite, she cleared the crumbs off his beard, and I decided I wanted to learn Spanish. Jealousy tickled in my stomach.

“Paula, ven!” Abuela called out, and Paula retreated. I finished the second to last cut and set the scissors aside, cracking my fingers.

“Where does she want you to go?” I asked him. “She said, come mi amor.”

“Comein Spanish means eat. She wanted me to eat.”

The jealousy in the pit of my stomach gained potency, leaking into my veins. Why was I so jealous of this woman?

“Oh, well, now I see how you fed all those muscles over the years. I mean, Paula fed them.”

“Paula, Maria, Rosetta…” His mustache lifted into a cocky pattern, and I rolled my eyes. Was he doing this on purpose?

“I thought you said they had no pastries, yet here is Paula, stuffing your mouth with muffins, cookies, and pineapple empanadas all day. And God knows what else.”

“Would you rather stuff my mouth?”

Yes.

And just like that, my jealousy morphed into arousal. Heat swooshed through my body, sending sweat to my pores. I removed the scarf and fanned myself.

“I’m gonna wash up in the river, and then we’re riding up the mountain to get a wifi signal.”

Yes!

I did an imaginary fist pump. Frankie was the first on my list to call, then Emma and Carly. I’d check in with Bev as well.

“Grace? Are you listening?”

“Yeah, I am,” I lied.

“I shouldn’t be long, and it looks like you’re on your last client.” He pointed a little girl sitting on the chair.
