She slid down my body, and we turned to a stunned Grace. I cleared my throat.

“Rachel, this is Grace. Grace, Rachel. My old partner.”

“And girlfriend?” Grace lifted a brow.

Rachel laughed. “No, no. It’s an inside joke. Hunter’s like a brother to me, and my wife would be upset.”

If Rachel was trying to ease Grace’s worry, it worked. I gave her a quick kiss where the pink shade covered her glowing cheek.

“Did you get it?” I asked Rachel.

“Yeah. I got it.” She passed me the phone.

“Do you mind keeping Grace busy?”

“I can definitely do that.” She winked.

“Not that busy. Hands off.”

“Are you going up the mountain in the middle of the night?” Grace asked.

“No.” I lifted the phone. “This baby works from here.”

Her eyes sparkled.

“And I promise to get an update on the salon.”

“Thank you.”

I left them to chat and dialed Scar’s number. He picked up on the second ring.

“I’ve been expecting your call.”

“Does that mean you have good news?”

“Chad’s in custody, and the salon’s ready. My mother wants to talk to Grace as soon as she gets back, and your jet will be ready in the morning.”

Morning.

It felt too soon for the adventure to end. I wanted Grace here. I wanted us here.

“Got it. We’ll see you soon.”

I hung up and walked back. Grace and Rachel were sitting on a bench underneath the rooted tree. Grace’s shoulders were slouched forward, and I stopped before reaching them.

Grace lifted her head. Tears streamed down her face and her body shook visibly. I tightened my hands into fists.

“Rachel, what did you say?”The tendons in my neck strained.

“I’m sorry,” Rachel whispered. “I didn’t know.”

Grace stood up and looked me dead in the eyes.

“Is it true? You’re sterile?”
