I laughed. My sister-in-law was a doctor at the emergency department and found work less hectic than their twin boys. Hopefully, one day it would be me running around the yard, chasing little ones running after the dog.

“And you’re as madly in love with her as the day Brad Hartley croaked?”

He laughed.

“I think I need his brother to join him in hell.”

“We’re working on it, but I need you to stay close to Hunter in the meantime.”

“Why?”

“Chad’s bail hearing is coming up.”

“And you think they’ll let him go?”

“There are things we can control in court, and there are things we can’t. What we can control is your safety, and that won’t happen until the jury reads the verdict and he’s put away.”

I slumped. “Sounds like it will take some time.”

“Hey, maybe you want to release some tension on a pole?”

“You and my brothers can keep your strip club business to yourselves. I’m not that talented.”

“You work out. You’d be surprised what you can do.”

“Not stripping. I want want a family and I don’t want to do it alone. I want Hunter there, you know?”

“Hunter loves you. I know it’s been hard, but you rarely find a partner who would die for you.”

“The way Jules risked her life for you?”

“For me, her sister, and many more. You should come over sometime to see your nephews. They’re growing up fast.”

My stomach grumbled. “Only if you promise to make my favorite barbecued ribs.” Truth was, I’d come over to watch cartoons with the boys any day.

Scar walked me to my car. We said our goodbyes, and I drove to a café near my aunt’s boutique. I picked up a granola bar and a sandwich to go, snacking on the way to my aunt’s store.

Aunt Mary hugged me hard and immediately moved onto her new lingerie collection. “I set that special one aside for you. I also sent a box with every item from the collection to your house.”

“Thank you. These are gorgeous.”

“You’re welcome, but I hope you didn’t need them in Costa Rica.”

I tried to dismiss the query with a smile. “Wouldn’t you like to know?”

“I would, actually.”

My cheeks heated.

“We had a great time, but I have to get ready for my reopening. I need to hire your staff again.”

“Frankie already hired some of my men. I’ll make sure there are enough.”

“Thank you.”

“Would you like a glass of water or orange juice? Grace, you look pale.”

I fanned my face and sat on a cushioned seat in the middle of the room. “It’s humid outside, and…” I stopped, searching for the right words. Maybe it was better to just spit it out?
