They nodded in unison, and Axel walked across the room toward me.

“Blood or not, she’s our sister, and she’s one of us. We’re bringing your team from Silver Securities on this.”

I left with a more hope than I’d had when I arrived, and I headed for the shopping mall. If I had a chance of winning back Grace’s trust, it would have to start with a good bribe and a ton of flowers. I dialed a friend’s number, and she picked up on the second ring.

“Hola, cariño.”

“Rachel, I need a favor.”

“Aww, I would love to be a godmother to your child. You’re so sweet.”

“Cut the crap out. This is serious.”

“So is this. A little bird told me that Dr. Grios made a few surgical errors before he died—ones specifically related to pelvic injuries. He had some agenda to populate the world with handsome little babies and told eight of his previous patients they were sterile when they weren’t; and they ended up with a dozen pregnant women. There’s a lawsuit in place.”

“What the fuck are you talking about?”

“I’m saying Dr. Grios told eight other patients I interviewed they were sterile, and they weren’t. You could be the ninth.”

“Why the fuck did you interview them?”

“I felt bad after Costa Rica. I know Grace was upset, and I wanted to fix things. Also, we’re looking into having babies, so we’re searching for a sperm donor. Hey, are you interested? Your genes and our genes would make beautiful babies.”

“I’m sterile, Rachel.”

“So said the guys I interviewed. Anyway, you needed a favor?”

Fucking Rachel.“Yes, thank you. Do you know anyone in Nassau County?”

“Do I know anyone? I know everyone. What’s the job?”

“I need a prisoner hurt enough to be transferred to ADX Florence.”

“That’s quite a few counties away.”

“Can you pull it off?”

“Can you make babies?”

I tightened my grip on the steering wheel and merged onto the interstate, praying the answer to both was a yes. But she was wrong. If I could have babies, I would already have had a bunch running around the village in Costa Rica. After Grace dumped me, I thought I had nothing to lose, and Paula was there to unwind. But I was wrong. I had a lot to lose. I didn’t want to lose Grace now that she was mine again.

“You’re delirious, Rach. Listen, if you won’t do it, I’ll find someone else.”

“Okay, I’ll do it. Relax, Hunter. Jesus, you sound like your balls are on fire.”

She wasn’t wrong. “I need it done before Monday. He can’t show up for bail. I’ll send you the details.”

“Monday. Got it. Consider it done. So, about the godmother thing—”

“Fine.” I pulled my fingers through my hair and made a turn. “I promise you’re first in line to be my kid’s godmother.”

“Yes!”

I imagined her punching through the air.

“Are you around this weekend? Grace is reopening her salon. It would be great to see you.”

“Any more secrets I shouldn’t speak of?”
