I slowly rose off of him and shimmied higher. My mouth took his in a lingering kiss, breathing gratefulness into his lungs. When I pulled away, I skimmed my nose over his.

“I love you, Hunter Silver, and I’ll love you no matter what the outcome.”

He kissed me again.

“I should shower and go. I’m meeting up with Frankie at the salon for final touches, and I promised I’d let him give me the official tour.”

“No seconds?” He grasped my behind and squeezed it. “Because my hand is feeling better, and it’s my turn to fuck you.”

I left a promising kiss on his lips. “Later tonight. Kitchen counter?”

“You’re a vixen, Grace Wagner. Give Frankie my best, and tell him the place looks amazing. Also, tell him not to keep you long.”

I laughed. “You’ve seen my salon?”

“I had to ensure it was up to your standards, and I’m happy to say you’ll love it.”

“Thank you for taking care of me. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to shower.” I slid off of him and off the bed.

“Since when do you shower alone?” He hopped out of bed and ran after me to the washroom, catching up midway. I wrapped his injured hand in a bag and washed him up before I took care of myself.

I dressed to go out. We shared a quick breakfast, and I kissed him with longing at the door. Frankie was seeing me in three hours, but Dr. Riley had me booked in less than thirty minutes. My period was delayed, and I wasn’t sure when I could start my injections—because if Hunter agreed to donor insemination, maybe we’d have our family after all. Or maybe his damage could be reversed? It felt like my options were multiplying by the minute, and I couldn’t wait to see Dr. Riley.

I grabbed a banana on my way out the door and hopped in the car. Thirty minutes later, I was at the clinic, lying down in a paper gown on a paper-covered cold table and counting spots on the ceiling. Dr. Riley aimed the warm gel on my belly. A nurse had drawn my blood, and I lowered my gaze to his guiding hand across my skin.

“Any viable eggs, Dr. Riley?”

“We’ll do an internal ultrasound for those, but I want to check for something else first. You say you’ve been feeling nauseous?”

“Yes, but I’ve also been under a lot of stress.”

“I thought you went to Costa Rica on a vacation.” He pulled his gaze away from the screen and apologized with his eyes. “Sorry to intrude. Your Aunt Mary told me.”

He refocused on the screen and shifted his hand, angling over a spot off the center.

“It’s all right. I can’t lie. Costa Rica was fun, but returning home wasn’t.”

He laughed. “That’s what usually happens after a vacation. Nobody wants to return to reality.”

“I think you’re right. In Costa Rica, I lost a sense of reality, and it felt so good.” I beamed. “The nature and the people were amazing. It was a different world, and the few days we spent there felt like months.”

It also felt like the time spent there was absolutely not enough. I missed the rainforest.

Dr. Riley cleared his throat. His brows narrowed as he focused on the screen, then he gently nodded to himself as if he knew exactly what he was looking at. He removed the monitor from my belly and passed me a towel to clear the gel.

“Grace, I’d like to present you with a new reality, because it looks like you’re pregnant.”

“What?” My heart nearly stopped, and I pushed up to my elbows

“That’s impossible.”

“You’ve had sex?”

“Yes, but you said I had no viable eggs.”

“It’s also possible I missed an egg.”

I shook my head as he took the towel and cleared the gel off for me. “You don’t understand. It’s not possible because the guy I was with is sterile.”
