Fucking Rachel.

I quickly typed a message to the group chat:Gearing up and heading to the northeast location. Dispatch units to all other locations and have medical on standby.

Rachel was already driving by the time I finished the text. Fifteen minutes later, we pulled into the driveway of a secluded home in the forest. I followed her inside the safehouse and we changed, geared up, and went back out on the road without saying a word.

It wasn’t until we parked a mile away and started a hike through the woods that she spoke. “Whatever happens, you’re not going in alone.”

I cranked my neck sideways, releasing pressure. The night I didn’t listen to her flashed in my mind. Gunshots, fire, screaming girls… I wouldn’t make the same mistake again.

“I’m not going in alone, but I’m not holding back either.”

I set my night vision on. She adjusted her goggles, and we scoped the little cabin in the woods. “One car, barred windows, turning on heat sensor… and there he is. They’re alone in the back corner bedroom, and no one else is visible around the perimeter.”

“Got it.”

I confirmed her visual and prepped my gun.

“Going lethal tonight?” she asked.

“I’m not taking any chances. Just have my back.”

I focused my binoculars on the bedroom window and zoomed in. Grace was lying flat on the bed with her arms above head and legs apart, likely tied to the bedposts.

“I’m gonna kill that bastard.” My jaw ached from clenching.

“We can’t wait for backup. Are you sure you can do this?”

I don’t deserve fatherhood if I can’t.

“She’s my world.”She’s my Queen.

My phone rang with Dr. Riley’s number. I pressed the button on my earpiece.

“Hello? Dr. Riley, thanks for calling me back, but I can’t talk. Grace is in danger. I know she’s pregnant, but did she choose a sperm donor? Did you implant her?”

Was that even the right way to ask?

“Grace came in for a check up and new IVF treatment earlier this week, but we did an ultrasound and there was no need to continue. She was already pregnant. Grace got pregnant on her own, Hunter.”

“That’s impossible. I’m sterile.”

“I’d get that checked out because if you’re the only man she’s been intimate with, then you know how she got pregnant. Is she in real danger?”

I held the binoculars firmly against my eyes and focused in as Chad knelt in the middle of a bed. He lifted his arm and jabbed something between her legs.

“Yes, she is. Thanks, Dr. Riley. I gotta go.”

I hung up.

CHAPTER 18

GRACE

Iwoke on my side in an awkwardly uncomfortable position with the sound of my brain expanding and my head pounding. Somewhere in the distance, the rush of flowing water reminded me of a waterfall, but I wasn’t in the rainforest. And I wasn’t tucked safely in Hunter’s arms. I was somewhere cold and dark, without a source of light. My limbs ached, and my mouth felt like a giant cotton ball. A dull pain throbbed at the side of my head, but when I tried to bring my fingertips to the source of the pain, I realized my wrists were bound and tied behind my back. My breath hitched.

“What the hell?”

I swung my legs over the mattress but my feet were bound as well and I nearly fell off. The smell of mold and mildew filled the space. A distinct stench of urine hung in the air. I stopped moving and listened for outside noises, but I heard nothing. It was dead silent.
