ChapterOne

Macy

"You'll never find anyone who puts up with your shit, Macy. You're worthless. Those extra pounds won’t have anyone knocking at your door." The words echoed in my head as I packed up my meager belongings.

My eyes burned but I ignored his commentary. He laughed at my silence before continuing the verbal attack.

“You’re disgusting. No one else will fuck you like I do.”

Luke was using every insecurity against me, hellbent on breaking me down into staying.

No fucking chance, asshole.

How had I not seen how bad things with Luke had gotten?

He started out so sweet but over time convinced me no one else could love someone like me. Every pound I gained, every new thing I tried, ended in more and more fights.

Until now.

I was done being treated like shit, done with hearing him scream, and wondering if his fists would target me instead of the walls.

Something shattered overhead, raining glass and plaster down on me. With a yelp I ran, snatching my phone off of the table and sprinting for the basement. My pulse pounded in my head as fear consumed me.

I nearly slipped due to my socked feet but stopped myself as I ran to the basement door and locked myself in before rushing down the stairs.

There was no thought behind my actions, only survival. I had makeshift weapons down here thanks to my tools and I had a feeling if he made it down I was fucked anyway.

Thank fuck for the lock on this door. Though it wouldn't keep him out long.

My phone was clutched in my hand so tightly my muscles protested but it wasn't until I was tucked safely in a corner that I opened my contacts, calling the one person who would tear down this door to save me.

The phone rang three times before my father's voice filled the line.

"Hey, sweetheart, it's been too long."

"Daddy?" I said, my voice breaking into a sob.

"Macy, what's wrong?" his voice was hard now, fierce. Papa bear was the exact thing I needed right now.

"Luke is scaring me. I'm locked in the basement and I don't know how long it'll keep him out. I was packing to leave..." I trailed off as more sobs hit me. His keys rattled in the background and a door slammed.

"You stay on this line, Macy, you hear me?" he demanded. My chest tightened at the fierceness in his tone. Hope tried to blossom but as more things crashed upstairs I refused to let it grow.

I was not safe yet. Dad was still on his way.

The line muffled as my dad shouted something in the background. More voices joined his as he made his way outside into his SUV. The keys in the ignition had me sobbing again, this time unable to hold back as the gravity of the situation washed over me.

Fuck, I was so stupid. This was on me. I should have seen the red flags for what they were.

As the minutes ticked by I tried to follow the sounds of Luke destroying the home we’d built together. He could decimate every memory we created here. It was all built on lies and I wanted no part of it.

"Macy, keep breathing," Dad ordered me. "Don't you give up on me. You hear me?"

He was desperate, worried, as he talked me through it. I'd been a shit daughter, not keeping in touch like I should. Yet here he was coming to save me.

"I'm sorry, Dad," I whimpered as a loud thud echoed in the basement. Wood splintered and I knew he was making his way through. "I love you."

"Dammit, drive faster!" Dad shouted at the cars around him, the engine revving. I closed my eyes, focusing on the noise coming through the line and my thudding heart instead of the monster trying to get to me.
