"Let her eat," Tate growled as he joined us, depositing a bowl of fruit on the tray and handing me a coffee.

"My hero," I said as I took the warm mug and inhaled the rich aroma of hazelnut coffee. "Can we just stay here and be lazy and not join the rest of the world today?"

"Only if we can fuck you again before the day is done," Brock answered without missing a beat.

"Won't hear any complaints from me," I said as I sipped my coffee, not bothering to hide the satisfied smile that spread across my face. There was nothing that could break me out of this little bubble we'd created here. No responsibilities, just us learning about each other and loving every fucking second of it.

This is what I deserve.

ChapterFourteen

Macy

What had started as emails had escalated into calls, texts, and even a letter addressed to me at the rink. It was getting to the point I was jumpy and on edge, waiting for them to pop up at the next game or to walk right in like they had any right to.

Luke never liked losing.

Me leaving, ignoring him, and refusing to speak to his family, was the biggest loss of his life and he didn't have the sense to let it go.

If he came here, I wasn't sure how that would end.

I was smart enough to document everything, taking screenshots at the very least before archiving them out of sight.

The phone rang and I jumped, Dad giving me a weird look from his desk before answering.

"Hawk Arena, this is Cal Slade speaking." His eyebrows furrowed in confusion. "One moment."

"Who is it?" I asked, already holding my breath.

"A Victoria?" he questioned, muffling the receiver with his hand. Instead of the fear I thought I'd feel, I was fucking pissed. I stood up from the pile of paperwork I was sorting and stormed over, snatching it from his hand.

"Look, Victoria. I'm not interested in hearing you out. I have no doubt he's told you a plethora of fucking lies and I want no part of him to be in my life. Stop harassing me or I will go to the authorities."

"Macy!" she growled in frustration. "He told me what happened."

"Excuse me?" I clarified, stuttering over the words in my disbelief.

"Listen. I'm so sorry that happened and I'm not trying to put stress on you. He's just... threatening to kill himself and I don't know what else to do." The desperation in her voice rang true but I wasn't at all surprised by it.

"I'm sorry, Victoria. I suggest calling EMS to come get him if he's unsafe, that sounds like a psychiatric emergency."

She gasped, horrified by my response but I wasn't done.

"This is one of the things he's used against me, it's abuse, and I won't put up with it. Get your son some help and stop letting him act like a monster," I said bluntly.

There was no gentleness in my tone, it was blunt, honest, and completely necessary.

I hung up the phone and didn't realize I was shaking until my dad was in front of me, holding my hands steady.

"Macy?"

"Luke's mom," I admitted. "She's been calling me on and off for days. Emails, texts, social media. Anything she can use. He's threatening to kill himself if I don't talk to him but I won't."

"You handled that well, sweetheart, breathe for me."

"What's wrong?"

It was Tate and I didn't realize I was moving until I was tucking myself into his chest. He let out a rumble of surprise but held me tight. He must have stared down my dad for answers because he filled him in on everything.
