“Asleep.”

“He does that now? He’s mortal.” Soren laughs.

Holter and I stare at Soren. There’s nothing wrong with him, but he’s young enough that we still remember him to be a pain in our asses.

“I’m sorry to hear about your dad,” he tells Holter.

“Thanks, he’s stable. I just came back from the hospital.”

“I came by to see if I could show Annabelle what I’ve found for her. There’s not much. We didn’t expect to need another pod room in Glyden for a few years. I found one, but it’s not in the upper tower.”

All the Drakos children of Ophelia live in the upper tower.

“I’m sure it’s fine.” Holter slaps Soren’s arm.

“Mother is sponsoring Annabelle, and you know she’s not going to be okay with fine.” I glare at Soren.

“I can’t make something where there isn’t anything. Would you have me evict someone and give the apartment to Annabelle?”

I have to glare at Soren for a minute because, yes, I think I would. “She’s the future of our nation.”

Soren sucks in his lips. He might be in charge of the Glyden Dome physical structure. But I’m his oldest brother, the current CEO of Glyden Mining. When I’m king, we will need a new CEO. Soren’s the obvious choice, but not if I don’t back him. He’ll be spending the rest of his life sorting out the jigsaw puzzle of apartments.

He nods. “Honestly, Castor, it’s all I have right now, at least until the new dome is finished. Then there might be something mid-tower. Do you want to see it? If Mother will have her, she can stay in the Drakos apartment until it’s ready a year from now. I’m not sure why any mermaid would want to leave such luxury.”

Holter looks at me and back at Soren. “Brother, you have a short memory.”

Soren smiles. “It wasn’t all that bad. Overcrowded, yes. But not that bad. I’m sure you’re too busy with all the things going on with the company. I can show Annabelle the apartment.”

“Alone? No.”

“Holter can come along too.” Soren takes a step to my apartment door, and I move between him and it.

“Come on, brother, let me meet her. Mother says she’s radiant. And Ophelia never gives a compliment like that.” Soren smirks at me. Oh, someone has filled him in on me not wanting them together.

He’s right. Our mother doesn’t dole out compliments, not unless there’s something in it for her. Or she really means it. In this case, it would be getting her son in with someone who could be a big player. And away from me, whom she expects to be king. Ophelia is willing to help Annabelle as long as it helps her and Glyden.

“No,” I snap. “Where is this apartment? What level?”

“I told you it’s not mid-tier or above.”

“Where exactly?”

“Seabed.”

Holter whistles. No one worth anything lives on the seabed.

“You think Mother will approve a seabed apartment for someone she is sponsoring?”

“No. But I can’t make an apartment appear from nothing. You could give up your apartment and move to the seabed. I could have this place remodeled by the end of the month.”

“No, it’s not big enough for a pod apartment and you know it.”

“You hardly use it. Nico and Holter are always away. And you’re at the human headquarters or sleeping in your office here. It’s a waste.” Soren taps the wall.

“They’re sleeping,” Holter says.

“Right, sorry.” He smiles.
