“And what happens when you become this form again?” Primrose questioned.

“Essentially, I regenerate. Same old me with the same red eyes, but the body is new. It was a decision The Committee made when they decided to allow spirits to shapeshift. They didn’t want us to be able to justpoof, disappear, so having a decaying body holds us more accountable for our actions. There’s evidence, at least for a short while,” he explained.

“Interesting. So why did you visit me as a raven?” Primrose’s head cocked to the side.

“Once I figured out where you were, I came and visited you in my raven form. I thought it would be less menacing than a man. I needed to see how you were doing and then report to Aeternus.”

Primrose’s forehead scrunched up, “Why did you care how I was doing? You don’t even know me.”

“I can’t explain.”

“Excuse me?”

“I am physically incapable of explaining the truth, please just call it a favor for an old friend.” He sighed.

“You’ve said that to me before, but why can’t you explain?”

Protego stood up and stared down at Primrose. “I thought you were clever, but maybe I was mistaken. Don’t you think if I could tell youwhyI can’t explain, I’d just be able to explain it?!”

Primrose stood as well, her chest against his abdomen, and looked in his fiery eyes, “Rude! I’m not stupid; don’t you see how none of this makes sense?”

The air felt hot as Primrose glared at him, neither of them moving an inch. They were close, feeling each other’s breaths. Protego’s jaw tensed as he stared back at the woman standing before him. Primrose loosened her body and crossed towards the door.

“Where are you going?”

“I’m going to check on the girl, don’t worry about it.” Primrose looked back at him.

“I’m coming with you,” Protego informed.

“If you’d like to, I won’t stop you, but it isn’t necessary.”

Protego crossed over to her. “It is to me. I hope you know I’m not lying about anything.”

Primrose nodded as they exited her bed chambers and headed towards the guest room Mrs. Sharp placed the young child in. The room was empty, less ornate than Primrose or Protego’s. The paint on the walls was white, and the furniture a simple wood, lacking detail carved into the columns of the bed frame.

“How is she?” Primrose asked, crossing towards Haruka, who stood at the end of the small bed the young girl laid on.

“I’m good,” stated a young, high-pitched voice.

“She wouldn’t utter a single word for me.” Haruka exhaled, walking over to Protego.

Primrose sat on the bed next to the child and felt her head. “Your temperature feels normal now.”

“Are you a princess?” The young girl asked, sitting up.

“No, I’m just a lady.” Primrose smiled at the young girl, looking into her beady, beaming black eyes. “What’s your name?”

“Alina.”

“Alina, where in the realm of Terra are you from?” Haruka asked, coming closer.

“I don’t know, I can’t remember. I think nearby? I didn’t go far.” Alina frowned.

“Far from where?” Haruka questioned her, black eyebrows furrowing.

“I don’t know!” Alina exhaled in frustration.

“Haruka, just let her be. I’m sure she hit her head or something. She probably has short-term memory loss.” Primrose smiled down at the young girl in an attempt to be comforting.
