“There was a rat in my soup!” Mrs. Sharp yelped and handed the bowl to Protego.

“Where’s Haruka and Mr. Sharp? Are they okay? What did Alina do?”

Mrs. Sharp stared at Protego in shock, “They’re fine. Please remove the rodent.”

Protego scooped the rat out of the bowl and placed it in his coat pocket. “Where’s Alina?”

“The child? She’s upstairs with Haruka,” Mrs. Sharp answered.

“That’s no child.”

“I’m sorry, I don’t understand.” Mrs. Sharp’s features scrunched up.

“Just stay calm. I’ve got it handled,” Protego assured her.

Mrs. Sharp looked at him, frustrated, “You are the one flustered, boy.”

Primrose watched as Protego steadied his breathing and prepared himself as if readying for battle. As they treaded up the stairs, however, everything seemed in place. No paintings were damaged, and not a single plant or statue moved from where they had last seen them. As they approached the spare bedroom, which had now been taken up by Alina, Primrose heard giggles.

On the floor sat Haruka and Alina, rolling dice and moving spaces on a game board.

“No fair, I’m convinced you’re cheating!” Haruka let out a low, quiet chuckle.

“I’m not cheating. You’ve just got bad luck.” Alina grinned.

Primrose felt her head lighten as she watched the two of them experience such joy.Could this child really be a monster? What if we’re wrong?

“We’re back!” Primrose announced to the room, eyes beaming. Haruka stood and embraced her in a firm hug while Alina nodded at Protego. Primrose watched out of the corner of her eye as Protego’s teeth peeked through his lips, fighting a snarl.

“Something wrong, Protego?” Alina sized him up and cocked her head to the side, smiling ear to ear.

“Homesick,” he replied.

“The eternal flames of Aeternus are better than here? I don’t think so,” she taunted him.

How did she know he was a demon? His ears make it a bit obvious but don’t angels look similarly? And sorcerers have pointed ears too!

Primrose’s line of thought was interrupted by a loud knock on the front door downstairs. The group walked towards the front door, everyone lining up.

“It’s most likely Master Zuberi,” Mr. Sharp stated. “It’s too early for your parents to be home, Lady Primrose.”

Opening the door, Primrose was greeted by familiar green eyes and long red hair. Covered in dirt and sweat, Sera stood before them. Primrose ran, and Sera dropped her bags to the ground and hugged her cousin. Primrose embraced her before pushing Sera out with her arms.

“Where are my parents?” Primrose questioned her.

“They went to the capital without me! When we heard news that monsters attacked towns near Vero Village, they sent me back to warn you. Have you seen many?”

“Too many,” Protego informed her. Walking outside, he removed the rat from his coat pocket, and Primrose watched as it scurried away.

As the rest of them filed outside, Sera let go of her cousin’s hug, and tears were welted up in her eyes. She ran towards Haruka who lifted her up, muscular biceps flexing in the process.

“Haruka!! I missed you too, but on The Committee, everyone is here!” Sera said nervously.

“If I’m being honest, I don’t give a fuck anymore,” Haruka said, kissing her softly.

Primrose smiled at the two women and then Protego, whose eyes gleamed with longing.

“Hi, I’m Sera. Primrose’s cousin,” Sera introduced herself, making eye contact with Protego.
