“Haruka…” Sera said, placing a freckled hand under her jaw.

“I just really liked her. I mean, I trusted her. I felt like maybe we could care for her or something. It was silly, but I kept tossing around ideas. Sera and I, with our daughter Alina, living in some cottage somewhere in the middle of Mid-Terra.” Haruka sighed, tears forming in her eyes.

“I’m sorry.” Primrose reached out and rubbed Haruka’s shoulder.

“No, you did the right thing by ending it,” Haruka assured her.

“I’d say she’s in a better place, but she isn’t,” Protego stated. “I can see if I can sneak her into my territory, though if that helps.”

“I—” Haruka started but was interrupted.

“That would be nice. We’re going to go to our rooms now. We’ll catch up in the morning.” Sera smiled, and they walked arm-in-arm towards Sera’s chambers. Primrose watched as the two women exited, and felt relief fill her chest, warming her. Grateful everyone was still alive.

“You need a bath,” Protego suggested, scooping Primrose up into his arms.

“Are you saying I stink?”

“Yes. You reek ofdeath.” He chuckled.

Chapter Fifteen

Asthewarmwaterpooled around her, Primrose placed her arms on the edge of the tub and looked at Protego.

“I’m really proud of you,” he said as he palmed her cheek and kissed her nose.

She scrunched where he had just planted a kiss. “Proud of me for what?”

“Awakening your powers. I know magic is a finicky thing but you did fantastic, starling.”

“How did you know I’ve always had them?”

“Who’s to say if I did know? But obviously, you do have them.” He rubbed her cheek.

“When must you go back?” Primrose solemnly stared into his deep, ruby eyes.

“Why must you act like our time together is so finite?” Protego questioned.

“Because it is.”

He recoiled his hand and stared at her. “It doesn’t have to be.”

“But it does! I will marry Hugo by the end of this autumn.”

“When the spell is broken—I’ll leave then.”

Primrose swirled her finger around in the clear blue water, watching the ripples form and fade beneath her touch. She considered them—considered the time they had left together.

“Come, let’s go to bed.” She grabbed his hand and stood, her naked figure bared before him.

Protego put one fist to his teeth while his hungry eyes sized her up.

“It’s been a long day, Protego.”

“Understood, starling.” He kissed the hand he held and led her towards the bed. They laid there in silence, Protego lazily brushing his fingers against Primrose’s stomach. She cooed as she drifted off, melting into sleep.

Once they awoke, Primrose could feel his hard length behind her. Backing towards him, she teased and rubbed her exposed body against him.

“Fucking Aeternus,” Protego groaned before wrapping himself around her. He flipped and suddenly was on top of her, strong-arm adjacent to her head, pushing firmly against the mattress.
