Haruka barred her teeth at the man as he rode off.

“Can you not get us in trouble?” Sera glared at Haruka.

“He makes my skin crawl. I’m sorry. I cannot stand the way he looks at you both.” Haruka touched Sera’s hand.

“A dinner date? I think I’d rather have the monsters lurking about,” Primrose sighed.

A black bird flew by, and Primrose’s chest tightened. It ached. She watched it dip down towards a tree branch. Perched there, it cocked its head at them. She made eye contact with the bird, and it soared into the sky.Protego?

Haruka frowned. “That was probably a coincidence. Let’s head back to the castle.”

“We better find something nice for you to wear. I don’t want to risk Queen Lilith’s wrath,” Sera said.

“I’m going to go ahead. I’ll see you both back home,” Primrose said as she hopped onto Drusilla. They raced towards the castle, the wind moving through her golden locks of hair as Drusilla galloped forward. The horse’s coat shined in the sunlight, and Primrose felt as if they were one as their heartbeats synced. She wished to live in this moment for eternity.

As they moved through the large metal front gate, topped with swirling adornments, Primrose saw flashes of bright light enter her vision in waves. Images of her looking into mirrors and seeing another woman in the reflection and moments with Protego she didn’t recall. He came up to me in a tavern? When? I’ve never been…

The moments flashed by, and Primrose was unsure if they were real memories or hallucinations, everything becoming fuzzy. She had felt the white visions before, but only in sleep; she felt her head lighten and her forehead beaded with sweat as the haze continued stirring in her mind, images of what could have been, or what was, she wasn’t sure.

Primrose opened her eyes, unaware if she had fainted or fallen asleep. The gray sheets wrapped around her body were warm and comforting. Her mind flooded with all of the possibilities of what those visions meant. Were those a look into his past lover’s eyes? Were they simply a dream?

Unable to piece everything completely together, Primrose had one objective in mind.I have to bring Protego back. I need to know the truth.

She crossed the threshold of her bedroom, tiptoeing down the stairs and reaching towards the library.

Entering the now tidied space, Primrose’s chest heaved. The magic she once felt stirring in the air had dissipated, leaving only the scent of books and old wood.

Scanning the shelves for the stained red leatherbound book, Primrose groaned in frustration.Tenebris magicae. Tenebris magicae. Where is it?!

“Looking for something?” Haruka asked, standing in the doorway.

Primrose’s entire body froze. She could feel every muscle tighten as she held her breath, unable to move.

“I—”

“What were you looking to accomplish? More monsters? Peopledied, Prim. Villagers died because of the last spell you tried on your own, and you were going to perform another one?”

“I know,” She said.

Haruka’s retort was cold and reprimanding. “Do you?”

“Something is happening.” Primrose’s hands shook.

“What?” Haruka’s face shifted from disappointment to concern.

“I started seeing things, visions of moments,” Primrose said.

“Visions of what, the future?”

Primrose shook her head. “No, I think they’re of the past. Someone’s memories.”

“What do you think they mean?” Haruka asked, coming closer.

“I think Protego is trying to speak with me.”

“Keep listening. If he really wants to speak to you, he’ll return. Until then, just listen to the visions. Perhaps he is warning you of something?” Haruka gave a small smile.

“Warning me of what?” She questioned.
