“Sera, I need you to know that you’re the rightful heir. Your life was unfairly tossed aside for mine, and I want you to know I’m sorry. You deserve to be the next duchess,” Primrose said and looked at Sera, who had tears running down her face.

“I would do it all again. I’d lose my parents again and deal with Mrs. Sharp’s tough love if it meant I get the pleasure of growing up with you,” Sera replied, wiping away her tears.

“You should become the next duchess and make Haruka your consort. Start a fucking revolution. You can stop Queen Lilith and Queen Wilhemina. You can do anything. I believe you and Haruka could change the whole realm if you wanted to.” Primrose was crying then too. They stopped at the entry to the Gretchester Woods.

Sera grabbed Primrose and wrapped her arms around her. Primrose held her closely and wiped the tears falling down her face.

“You are the sun that lights this realm,” Sera whispered in her ear.

“I need you all to tell my parents I ran away. I ran away, but I’m safe and happy. Tell them I’ll miss them every day and that I never meant to hurt them, but I had to do this for myself,” Primrose said in a sob.

Sera nodded. “I will.”

Primrose moved to embrace Haruka, who was fighting back tears.I’ve never seen her cry.

“You’re my best friend. I hope you know that,” Haruka said.

“I do,” Primrose beamed, holding her.

“When will I see you again?” Haruka asked her.

“When you die, and The Committee deems your sins unworthy of Paradisus,” Protego teased.

“Fuck you, red-eyes.” Haruka laughed, and they all chuckled.

“I might actually miss you too. Maybe,” Protego said to Haruka, and her face transformed into an ear-to-ear grin.

Haruka belly laughed. “I have that effect on people.”

Primrose took one last look at them, at Sera’s ample figure and long, flowing red hair. She traced Haruka’s oval face with her mind, her muscular biceps, and how they held each other close. The two women’s love was tender and beautiful. They’ll be okay. They have one another.

“Take care of each other,” Primrose said and grabbed Protego’s warm, tan hand. They walked deep into the forest until she was sure nobody could see them.

“Where to now, starling?”

“Let’s go home.”

Epilogue

PrimroseandProtego’sbodiesstarted to melt away, flames coming off her in waves. Protego’s shadows mixed with her vibrant fire, creating a dreamscape of color. The sky was a painting, and their light had melted it together, swirls and bursts of color colliding. Potent and colorful vitality shooting through the seams of the land.

The realm erupted into bright beams of light, shooting out into every segment of the sky. Brighter than the sun itself, the illumination blasted through space and time. It rippled out of Terra, through Spirito, and into Aeternus.

The light exploded, cracking like lightning as chasms formed. Pooling out of the chasms were whirls of smokey shadow, melting out in waves. They danced along the midday sky and then dissipated into nothing. Following the shadows were blasts of wild, reckless fire, exploding outward in sudden bursts. The fire ceased and was reborn as swirls of smoke and fire formed two bodies, shaking everything in their wake. Cycles of shadow and fire performed pirouettes around one another, the two lifeforms now barely human-like.

Their bodies burst open, the melting colors dissipating, leaving only two corpses to rot on the ground below; the soil of Terra. Energy spiraled out of their chests and became two glowing orbs. The orbs bounced through the air, forming a tornado of light.

The figures shot through every realm until making their way into deep darkness. The twinkling lights that illuminated Aeternus shone a path towards the Sanctuarium.

A large metal fence gated the territory, a rift opening for the two spirits. As they floated towards other spirits, Protego looked at Primrose with vibrancy in his shadowed eyes.

“Protego,” Primrose called out, her voice a song.

“Yes?” he asked.

“I remember.”
