I hadn’t been able to save Ember.

I couldn’t save myself, but I had to savesomeone, even if was this obstinate bastard.

Tavion narrowed his eyes at me, color flooding his face. “I paid a fucking trunkful of gold for…”

“Finishing that sentence will be the last thing you ever do.” Raziel hissed, already on his feet, fists clenched at his sides.

“Try me, Montgomery.” Raz growled, pulling a dagger, death in his voice.

“Just fucking try me.”

ANARIA

Iground my teeth together so hard my jaw ached.

Gods, save me from stubborn males.

“I’m keeping you from becoming a monster, you idiot. Why can’t you see that?”

How could Tavion drive me so quickly to absolute rage? How could this pigheaded male make me forget the absolute disastrous mess of the prophecy…and make me so mad that all I wanted to do was wipe that gloating smile right off his face?

I pushed to my feet—focused on my ridiculously dense husband—intent on convincing the pompous arsehole I had his best interest at heart, when the air turned to ice, a whip of foul-smelling wind bent the surrounding trees nearly to the ground.

Solok appeared in our midst, snatched me around the waist and jerked me away from the others.

I barely heard Zor’s shouted warning because the bastard already held me pressed against him, razor sharp claws sunk into my throat so deep I could barely breathe.

“Let her the fuck go.” Raz circled closer, Zorander beside him, Tavion brandishing that enormous sword that had once been his brother’s.

“You’re a long way from home, Solok.” Zor measured us through slitted eyes, searching for an opening. “Are you sure you’re not lost?”

“I came to fetch a little lamb who wandered off. It’s time for her to return home and be a good little sacrifice. Give back what she took.”

It was that night in the clearing with Julian all over again.

Except this time, I knew who to trust. My gaze dipped to the scroll still clutched in Raz’s fist, the one Solok fixated on with singular intensity. If the Axe discovered the truth about us…

A second later, the scroll was nothing but dust, floating to the forest floor, our secret safe.

Solok chuckled, his chest rumbling against my back. “I don’t need proof. I’ve been listening long enough to knowallyour secrets.” A hideous shudder went through me at his gloating tone.

We were all so fucked.

“This information is worth a veritable fortune to the Fae King. What do you think he’ll give me, Anaria, for foiling such a wide spread plot against him?” The tip of his claw rasped along my cheek. “My guess is, I can name my price.”

A phantom breeze scattered the ashes, erasing all proof of the Oracle’s—and the Shadow King’s—plot.

“Let her go.” I blinked in surprise. That guttural, feral demand wasn’t Raziel, or even Zorander.

Tavion’s normally impassive face was contorted in rage. “Fucking put her down or I’ll finish what my brother started.”

“I should have seen the resemblance between you and Julian sooner.” Solok murmured, gripping me tighter, the imprint of his hand turning my flesh to ice. “You’d have been dead long ago, just like him.”

Sheer hatred twisted Tavion’s face into something sinister, his gaze dipping to mine before his eyes flicked to the trees, telling me to run. “Good thing you’re about as observant as a brick.”

“He died badly.” Solok crooned, magic pouring from his fingers, chilling my skin. “Begging for his life. A coward.”
