He shrugs. “Yeah, everyone just wondered where you got off to since you didn’t come home last night, and I wanted to invite Luke out with the guys.” He shakes his head. “I should have known,” he mutters. Then he squints at her. “Taylor took off this morning.”

Mindy frowns. “She did?”

“Yeah. Did something happen with you two?” Jake asks.

Mindy and I exchange a glance. She shared the details of her conversation with Taylor last night in between rounds of lovemaking.

She shrugs at Jake. “Why do you ask?”

“She was acting weird.” He rubs his chin. “Weirder than normal.”

“What do you mean?”

He rolls to his feet, brushing dust off his jeans. “Normally she gets sarcastic or angry when anyone talks about you, but last night at dinner it was more like she was depressed or something.” He lifts a shoulder and drops it. “I don’t know. Maybe I imagined it. Anyway, Luke, you want to go fishing?”

Mindy rests a hand on my shoulder. “You should go. I have some work to do anyway. I got a couple inquiries from musicians seeking representation, and I want to check them out.”

I cover her hand with mine. “Really? You didn’t tell me. That’s great, Mindy. I’m so proud of you.”

She shrugs, her cheeks flushing. “They might suck.”

“They might not.”

We beam at each other.

Jake clears his throat.

“Okay, weirdos, you about done? Can we go now, Luke?”

I keep my eyes on Mindy when I answer. “Yeah, you go ahead. I’ll be right there. Just give me 15 minutes.”

Jake sighs, his footsteps passing us as he stomps down the patio. “God save me if Taylor ever finds a boyfriend,” he grumbles.

ChapterTwenty-Nine

Mindy

“Thank you for helping with all this.”

I chuckle. “You’ve thanked me at least thirty-seven times, Finley. Stop it already.”

Her lips purse. “Have you been keeping count?”

We’re standing in the center of the cobblestone drive, near the cabins, waiting for the first busload of kids to arrive.

“Are you excited?” I ask Finley.

She hasn’t stopped fidgeting since we came down here to wait, and I’m pretty sure we still have at least fifteen minutes until they’ll arrive, but she was crawling up the walls in the house.

She taps on the clipboard in her hand. “I’m so excited and nervous I don’t even know what to do with myself.”

I put a hand on her shoulder. “It’s going to be great.”

She shifts on her feet. “I just don’t want anything to go wrong.”

“Are you kidding me? Between me and you, Jake, Archer, Oliver, Luke, the four counselors you hired, and the three chefs, I think it will be okay. Maybe.”

“You’re right. I know you’re right. I wish Taylor was here.”
