I rub my jaw, thinking. “I bet Laila would help.”

“That’s a good idea.” Mindy gives me a half smile. “We know she’s got decent pull. It’s not Blake Bonham pull, but it’s significant.”

Her phone rings. She reaches over to pluck it off the coffee table, her expression baffled. “I don’t know this number.”

And it’s eleven o’clock at night.

She answers. “Hello?” Her brows lift to her hairline, her gaze immediately locking with mine. “Blake?”

ChapterThirty-One

Mindy

“Slow down, I can’t understand you.” As soon as I picked up the phone, Blake started whining. “What did you say about Jeanette?”

I pull the phone from my ear and put him on speaker. Without missing a beat, Luke slips his phone out of his pocket and hits a button to record the conversation.

So smart. I want to kiss him, but Blake is talking, and I suppose we have more pressing issues to attend to.

“She stole my phone and disappeared. Have you seen her?”

“Why would I have seen her?” I’ve never met Jeanette Adams.

He doesn’t answer for a few long seconds.

“Blake. What is going on?”

He speaks in a rush. “It’s possible that she believes that you and I are back together and that I’m leaving her for you. Again.”

Luke and I exchange a baffled glance. “What? Why would she think that?”

“Because I told her?”

I lift my hand to my temple, where a headache has started to throb. “Is that a question?”

He sighs. “No. I was just angry about her lying about the pregnancy, and I wanted to make her angry.”

That’s probably the most self-aware sentence Blake has ever uttered.

I look over at the phone Luke is holding, still recording, and my mind sorts through various ideas and possibilities.

“How long ago did Jeanette leave?”

“This morning, around ten.”

Does this mean Jeanette is the one who texted Laila the video?

“And you said she has your phone?”

“Yep.”

“What do you think she’s going to do?”

He blows out a breath, the sound gusting over the phone line. “Maybe she’ll go to the press to try and make me look bad, maybe she’ll try to find you and blackmail you, I really don’t know. All I know is she’s got my phone and she wants to hurt me, and she definitely has the ammo right now.”

What the heck else is on Blake’s phone?

Also, what if Blake is lying? I don’t know why he would unless this is all some convoluted scheme to . . . what? Get me back? Not likely.
