He jumped for the gun, knocking her into her mate, and struggled to free the weapon from her tight grip. Laura darted for the door while the others scrambled to grab her.

Success! He wrestled the gun from Roberta, and it went crashing to the floor and went off, which freaked out everyone in the room. Fortunately, the shot hit one of the raptors in the leg.

“I’m hit, damn it!”

While he screeched, his friend tried to help him.

The other two stared from their alphas fighting with Gerald to the open door.

“Well, go after her, you morons!” Roberta yelled.

Laura had already escaped. Roberta raked at him with her nails, and he managed to avoid them while not dodging the blow Glen aimed for his stomach.

“Oof.” He bent over but quickly moved so that the attack from the one of the raptors behind him hit Roberta instead.

While those two tangled, he punched back at Glen, tossing the hawk on his ass with an uppercut followed by a kick to his gut.

Glen hit hard, cracking the back of his head on the ground, and lay there, stunned.

Gerald turned to see Roberta naked and shifting, which would be a problem. She was a harpy eagle with a six-foot wing span and wicked-sharp talons.

“You’re in trouble now, fox.” The raptor next to her dove at Gerald, shoving him to the floor in time to avoid Roberta’s outstretched claws.

“Thanks for the assist.” Gerald grappled with the guy, throwing punches as they rolled around, trying to keep himself away from Roberta’s sweeping attacks. She managed to gouge his back twice and ended up taking out the other raptor in an attempt to get at Gerald.

Her angry cry warned him she was out for blood.

Then a very angry grizzly burst through the doorway.

Laura roared and lunged at Roberta, dragging the eagle out of the air with one of her paws.

Gerald finally got the upper hand on his opponent and slugged him enough to get away. His back hurt like hell, but he focused on finding something to bind the raptor.

Coming up with duct tape, he shackled the idiot’s hands together. “And stay down,” he growled.

Turning, he noticed Roberta’s neck in Laura’s mouth.

Not good. “Laura, honey, I think you got her.”

Laura rumbled, and had he not known her, he would have taken a step back. God, she was one ferocious, gorgeous bear.

“I know. She’s bitchy and arrogant and a royal pain in the ass. But she’s not worth a murder charge.”

Laura raised a brow.

“Yes, you will feel guilty if you go outside the law. I know you.”

She huffed, and Roberta struggled for a second before Laura bit down harder. He could hear something snap, and Roberta cried out.

“Drop her.”

Laura spat the bird out, and Roberta lay crumpled on the floor, clearly distressed, with feathers all over the place.

Gerald looked from Laura’s thick hide and bloody mouth to the defeated raptors all over the place, assuming she’d already taken care of frick and frack outside. He gave her a big smile. “Damn, girl, I love you.”

Then, before she got too full of herself, he added, “And I know you love me. I totally made all this happen, didn’t I? You are the luckiest woman in Cougar Falls.”

Fat head, she telepathed. Don’t you mean you’re the luckiest man in Cougar Falls?
