He continued, not a speck of remorse in his jovial gaze, “And you can’t live without me. I’m perfect, and I’m yours.” When she remained silent, he cleared his throat and added, “I took on feathered fiends for you.”

She couldn’t help laughing at that, overjoyed with him, their friends, with life itself. Christmas music played throughout the house, and the feel of love was in the air while her dramatic fox continued to plead his case.

“And I was injured.”

“Come on, Laura,” her boss said. “Give the guy a break.” He added under his breath, “This is getting embarrassing.” His wife laughed.

“Thanks, Ty,” Gerald said drily, never taking his gaze from Laura.

“Yeah, Deputy,” the cats’ alpha yelled at her. “Don’t break Gerald’s poor heart.”

“He sure is pathetic on his knees like that,” the alpha’s brother muttered.

“Don’t be a dick, Grady,” Gerald said while still smiling up at Laura, though a sly look entered his eyes. “My bunches of love, woman of my dreams” —that’s a good one, she thought, until he added— “my Pooh-Bear.” A lot of laughter from everyone at that. “Admit you love me.”

She smirked down at him, seriously in love with the obnoxious fox. “I do love you, sugar-tits.”

The room grew silent before everyone burst into laughter, though she heard her mother say, “She gets that from her father, Maker rest his sarcastic soul.”

But Laura had eyes only for Gerald. His heart plain to see in his loving expression, he slowly rose to his feet, a huge smile on his face. “Now that’s a declaration of love if I’ve ever heard one.”

“Wait. Did she just call my son sugar-tits?” a woman asked in a frosty tone.

Laura had a bad feeling. “Was that your mom?”

He laughed. “Sure was. I love you, Laura.” Gerald kissed her. “Will you marry me and be my mate forever?”

“Do I have to?” she teased.

“Yes.”

“Then okay.”

The room cheered.

Laura kissed him, at home and happy, content with her own Christmas miracle. “You, Ger-Bear, are my one and only.”

He grinned. “Your honor, I rest my case. Santa brought me the best present of all. The raptors behind bars and a bear to call my own.” Then he leaned closer and whispered, “Now how about we find the mistletoe and make out all night?”

“If you don’t, I’ll have to ticket you for disappointing your mate.”

“We can’t have that now, can we?”

“Oh, it’s snowing again,” one of the guests said.

But Laura didn’t care, caught in her mate’s arms and lost in his kiss.

But then again…

Or did it happen like this?

Chapter One

Gerald Winter came from a long line of lawyers. Winter and Sons, the legal practice serving the small, unique town of Cougar Falls, Montana, catered to all kinds of law. From criminal to corporate, he and his family had been helping shapeshifters for one hundred and fifty years.

But he didn’t think he’d ever come across a case like this.

He glanced at the pretty deputy standing in the corner of the interrogation room in the town’s police department. She rolled her eyes, and he did his best to keep a straight face.
