Foxes loved to gossip, and news that the clan’s most eligible bachelor was not only dating a bear but thinking of settling down with one would not go over well.

Something Laura had to know.

He glared at her. She stared right back, a smirk on her delectable mouth. Then she turned back to Vanessa and raised a brow.

But the glint of challenge in her eyes made it impossible to resist. He leaned down to kiss Laura on the cheek, lingering to take in her scent, her soft skin.

She blinked, and her ripe lips parted.

He took advantage and turned her head to kiss her on the mouth. Not the best idea, because the bar in his pants would announce to everyone how much he wanted her.

He pulled back, pleased to see her cheeks flushed, her eyes cloudy.

Then her gaze cleared and she mouthed at him, her lips hidden by the sweep of her hair, Do it again. I dare you.

Something she never would have suggested had she known how much he really wanted her.

Vanessa cleared her throat, dragging his attention back to her. “Well, well. Who knew you had a thing for big old grizzlies?” She gave him a brittle smile. “Should I say congratulations?” She gave Laura a sour look and snorted. “Good luck, Laura. I doubt you can hold his interest for more than a few days.”

“At least I got him to say yes. You can’t even get a date.”

Vanessa’s gaze darkened. She ignored Laura and blew Gerald a kiss. “I’ll be waiting when it doesn’t work out. I hope she doesn’t hurt you, sweetie.” She winked. “You know, when she rolls over in bed.”

“You bitch.”

Gerald caught Laura before she could launch herself at Vanessa.

The arrogant fox laughed. “When you’re done slumming, you know where to find me. Happy holidays.” She sauntered away to approach a cluster of foxes staring at them.

“Oh, I loathe that woman.” Laura tried to pull away. “You want to let me go now?”

Gerald was having none of it. In a sickly-sweet voice, he said, “Oh no, sweetheart. We need to talk about our relationship now that you’ve spilled the beans.” Even as he spoke, heads turned to look at them, a lot of grins and laughter following.

“Gerald,” Laura growled and, in a whisper, added, “I was trying to help. Julia sent me.”

“Did she now?” He noted Julia no longer by the stove. “Well, you’ve done more than help. Come with me.” He tugged Laura into the nearest room.

Not a great idea, because the spare bedroom had a large bed, one he’d spent more than a few nights in after partying with Ty over the years.

One he’d once or twice imagined sharing with Laura.

And now here she was.

Alone.

With him.

Chapter Seven

Laura didn’t know what she’d been thinking to pretend a relationship with the arctic fox. Well, no, he was a red fox, but he still wore that icy composure like a second skin. Or at least, he had.

Now the cool front he typically projected had melted, to be replaced by a very annoyed, unfortunately sexy man.

Nervous and not sure why, she blurted, “Look, Julia sent me to help you out. She said Vanessa was bugging you. Now she’s not.” She tugged her arm away, aware he let her go.

Man, he’s stronger than I thought. The notion sent a tingle of anticipation through her.

“You deliberately made me the target of my clan,” he growled. “You know foxes love meddling, and now they’ll be all over me about my new girlfriend—who’s a bear!”
