He gave a knowing grin. “Oh, sure. Your mate takes precedence.”

“Hush up, you.”

He stared into her eyes and gave a warm smile. “I like you two together, Laura. You’ll be good for each other. He’ll calm you down, and you’ll stir him up. Make it real.”

“Make what real?”

He hugged her before leaving, and she stared in consternation after the departing vehicles.

But she had Chinese food and the possibility of hot sex with a foxy man on the menu.

She smiled as she got back in the car, wishing she weren’t on the other side of town for no good reason.

Chapter Thirty

Ty walked into the house with Chinese takeout and immediately knew he’d made a mistake by not locking his doors.

He wasn’t alone.

He turned around to face Roberta and Glen McKay, surrounded by a half dozen of their fiercest raptors, the heavy hitters who took care of the problems their alphas wanted solved with minimal fuss. He’d had his fair share of court time dealing with these idiots.

“Well, well. To what do I owe the pleasure?” he asked drily.

Roberta answered, as she usually spoke for her husband. An obnoxious woman who thought she should be in charge of the town. She was a beautiful golden eagle with a huge-ass wing span. A born predator no less fierce in human form.

Unfortunately, she had all the character of a two-dimensional villain. She didn’t understand why she couldn’t always get what she wanted, and she didn’t understand the word “no.”

“We’re here because you’re railroading my boy.”

“Roberta, that charge is beyond my purview. Judge Daniels already agreed charges are pending against your son. I have nothing to do with him now.”

“I know. But you’re the one feeding the prosecution. And I know you and your loser firm are the ones behind the push to knock me and Glen out of the alpha position.”

That was true. Gerald had been working tirelessly with the eagle leadership and a few free-thinking raptors not fond of the McKays to restore order to the raptor clan. To do that, they needed a legal perspective from someone attuned to clan law—of which he was an expert.

“I can’t discuss my clients, Roberta. You know that.” Two of her henchmen advanced, and he held up a hand.

“Please. If you’re going to pound me, can we take it outside? I don’t want to ruin anything my mother might have given me. She’s pretty strict about family heirlooms.”

He could see Roberta thinking on that, as Colleen Winter did carry some weight in town.

“Okay. Drag him out back.”

Before he could take himself out, three of her goons pulled him outside and tossed him into the snow. He shifted at once, knowing he’d have a better chance to outrun them than to suffer a beating in human form.

Unfortunately, she’d been prepared for that.

He got tangled up in his clothes while trying to flee, and a hawk tore through his side with sharp talons, drawing blood.

Luckily, he got free of his clothes and nipped at a falcon coming too close to his face. He crunched hard on a wing and heard bones snap. A bird screeched in pain.

“Damn it! He bit Jonas.”

Before things got too out of control, Gerald shifted back. “What do you think this will accomplish, Roberta?” he asked, breathing hard and holding his bleeding side.

“It’s just a warning to watch yourself. Keep coming after our clan and you and your family won’t have any place you can hide from me.”

“You committed assault. Do you really think I’m going to let this go?” She was out of her mind.
