“No, thanks. I’m perfectly capable.”

I sighed, wishing she would let me. I didn’t doubt she was capable, but I still felt strange not helping.

She followed me out of the cavern, and I led her to the room with the kitchen. I became painfully aware of all the dust, wishing that I would have cleaned up instead of spending my time jacking off.

If my brother hadn’t made me into an outlaw, then I could have taken her to my home in the hills on the north side of Canyon City. I’d built it with my own damn hands, and he’d taken it from me too. He’d ruined everything. I was convinced there was a curse in our family when there were two brothers like us.

He’d always been more charming, larger, and a damn good liar. But my father had always trusted me more. Given me more to do, offering me the family business since my brother was off being an ambassador for the planet. Someone had to take over our family ranch, but that hadn’t settled well with Rider.

We’d been raised well. I knew it hurt my mamas to see us like this. They knew I wasn’t bad.

My chest ached. I was a disappointment to everyone I loved.

I shook away the thoughts and refocused on my current pretty little problem.

“Sit,” I commanded.

The human didn’t like being told what to do, but she still sat at the table, holding her clothes to her chest. I reached for them again, but she leaned back.

“I don’t want to get dust on my costume.”

“I will put it somewhere safe,” I said.

She pressed her lips together, but nodded, allowing me to take her things. I fought the urge to hold them to my face, to drink in her scent. Instead, I left her briefly and took them to the other room, placing them in the hammock.

When I returned, she was wiping down the counters with a small towel. I let out a low hiss, shaking my head. “Stop. You don’t need to do that.”

“I need something to do,” she quipped. “I’m tired and hungry. I don’t even know what time it is. I do not know where I am. A god damned cowboy has kidnapped me. So, if you won’t let me cook, then let me clean so I don’t bite your head off.”

I narrowed my gaze. I felt frustrated that she insisted on working, but I could see she wouldn’t be swayed.

She wandered towards one of the worktables, looking over everything. I bristled at the thought of her looking over my inventions. What if she hated them?

“Just don’t mess with my blueprints,” I mumbled.

“Can I organize them?”

“No. They are organized.”

“They are clearly not,” she muttered.

I sighed and opened up a cabinet. Would she be this difficult the entire time? Arguing every time she had a chance to?

I pulled out several cans of food and then paused.

Could she consume the same foods I could?

I cleared my throat and turned around, holding up four cans. Four different options for her to choose from.I have to know her name. Just ask. Ask for her name.“Woman. Can you eat these?”

She turned around slowly, her expression scrunching up. I couldn’t fully understand her body language yet, but she didn’t like something I said. “Call mewomanagain, and we will have a problem. My name is Mari, notwoman.”

Mari. My hearts soared, happiness flowing through me. Her name was just as lovely as she was, unless she was mad at me. “My apologies, sugar. Mari, can you eat these?”

Mari set the dusty towel down and came over to me. I was correct about her height, too. Without her boots, the human barely came up to my chest.

Do I have lube here in the hideout?

Dhagonit. I had to stop thinking about her.
